Drive-In Garage

May 13 - Present Day.  Franz and Paul, and returning guest Katie, head on up to Warren County, New Jersey for a some trick shot archery, a little strip Monopoly, and talk about one of the quintessential slasher film-summer camp reveries.  So much wood!  So much darkness!  They were warned…They are doomed! Email Franz & Paul: driveingarage@yahoo.com

Franz, Paul, and Katie (and toughest meow south of the picketwire Meatball) are the spectacle of law and order rising up out of the gravy and the mashed potatoes.  Together, they take on the John Ford classic (celebrating its 60th anniversary!) as well as the Western genre — its legacy and themes, its many allures and complications.  So pull up a steak (and some deep dish apple pie) and let's turn...

It's yesterday once more as Franz and Paul delve into the early Todd Haynes music melodrama horror show biopic SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY.  Blending several narrative devices, an array of found footage and Mattel products, the film remains inventive and playful, incisive and haunting, and still packs a wallop.  Let's go back…  Email Franz & Paul: driveingarage@yahoo.com

You're not gonna find another deal like this anywhere in town: Franz and Paul revisit Robert Zemeckis' 1980 smash 'em up ballad to the American Dream — USED CARS, starring Kurt Russell, Gerrit Graham, Deborah Harmon, and TWO Jack Wardens for the price of one!  It's a madcap, no holds barred, blow up the competition, fight to the finish.  Remember, ya get what ya paid for at the Drive-In Garage!

This week: Franz, Paul, and Katie don't realize until around the two-hour mark that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything.  So throw on your Sid Vicious t-shirt, grab a can of "Food", and let's chase down that hot Chevy Malibu through the grimy streets of LA.  The Plate O' Shrimp Special is always on the menu at the Drive-In Garage!

Ya can't live with 'em, ya can't live without 'em.  There's something irresistible-ish about Franz and Paul, and returning guest Katie, when they talk about THE MUPPET MOVIE!  So prepare the standard "Rich and Famous" contract cuz it's a late '70s star-studded sort of approximately how it happened road trip to Hollywood.  DAH FLIMMM IS ROOOO-LING!

The wheels are in motion as Franz and Paul go a-muse-ing down the pink mylar road back to the 1980 electric roller boogie song 'n' dance extravaganza XANADU!  Big Band meets Rock 'n' Roll!  Dame Olivia Newton-John meets Sir Jeff Lynne!  Chocolate meets Peanut Butter!  Don't walk away from this one, folks!

The heat is on and the AC is off as we execute the perfect plan in no time flat.  Sidney Lumet, Al Pacino, and NYC re-team for the sweatiest dog day's journey into night in which Sonny climbs to sunnier climes.  The Drive-In Garage can make it happen!

Moore is more as Franz, Paul, and Katie (and extra special guest Meatball) hit the Bond running and venture past the stratosphere with the 11th entry in the James Bond franchise, MOONRAKER, or: The Space Case Brace Erase!  This one has it all, including the grand poobah of dry amusement Hugo Drax, as well as TWO separate Ken Adam supervillain secret lair finales.  Well…(clink!)…here's to the Drive...

In…Through…and Beyond!  From the Dark Ages of Europe in last week's episode we move over to the Dark Age of Disney.  Climb aboard the floating death ship USS Cygnus and enter into a vortex of know-it-all psychic robots, limping zombies, a mad Max marking time at the lip of a massive cosmic tomb, and Joseph Bottoms.  Franz and Paul are what's left of the crew, kept alive by means we don't pretend t...

THE LAWR!  We fought the Lawr and the Lore won!  Franz, Paul, and special guest Katie, head back to the Dark Ages — back to the mud, the metal, the music, the magic of John Boorman's EXCALIBUR!  That's right, it's a round table discussion tonight at the Drive-In Garage.

This week, Franz and Paul don't fight the enemy, they fight themselves.  Oliver Stone spent over ten years working on PLATOON, pulling from his own combat experience as well as Homeric Myth.  It's fierce, frustrating, grandiose, unmistakable Oliver.  So, into the 'Nam we go!  The Drive-In Garage can't even remember when they were 332.  Bravo Six Out.

We enter the Cimino-verse with the remarkable 1974 crime drama, THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT, starring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges.  And we unpack the fascinating key points, dynamics, and major attractions of the '70s Buddy Movie subgenre.  Franz and Paul don't want your watch, man. They want your friendship!

Well we're broodin' on up (north) to the Somafree Institute to talk about David Cronenberg's chilly family divorce-a-palooza, THE BROOD!  Along the way we encounter the Soberfree Oliver Reed, the Navelfree Ragelings, phenomenal earth tone interior design, and the saddest little girl in the world.  If you can't stand the brood, get outta the kitchen!

Franz and Paul are not heroes, just men who follow orders. The siege mentality is on full display in John Carpenter's 1976 Hawksian urban warfare classic.  The gentle "thhp! thhp!" of silencers obscures the chaos as we slowly realize that, on a cosmic level, we ALL wanted vanilla twist.

Tonight at the Drive-In Garage, love exists among the stars as we dive into '70s hazy-sunlit suburbia, have our prom tickets withheld, and thrill to the unmitigated power of Sissy & Piper!  We also try to determine if Miss Collins is the true villain of the movie.  THEY'RE ALL GONNA LISTEN TO YOU!  THEY'RE ALL GONNA LISTEN TO YOU!

We kick things off with a look at Dino DeLaurentiis' 1976 Christmas present to the world - KONG!   So bring the mosquito spray, and come join Franz and Paul as they cross over water and meet the biggest person in their lives.  Here's to the Big One!  Hail to the power of the Drive-In Garage! (and Petrox)

Hosts Franz and Paul welcome you to the Drive-In Garage, where they discuss their favorite films.
