Doomed to Fail

This is another one that's too horrible to make any AI images of! Yaser Said moved to the United States from Egypt, but when his daughters, Amina and Sarah, turned out to be more American than he wanted (ie: they wanted to have phones and talk to boys) Yaser murdered them in cold blood. Then, he went on the run for nearly a decade! It's a tragic story in so many ways! Instagram: https://www.instag...

Last week, Taylor's best friend from college had a baby. 20 years ago, he had a van that was carpeted in the back and only had two seats, when he picked her up from work for the first time, he was very clear not to get into any weird van, but specifically to get into his. Does that make sense? This story will very clearly spell out why you should never get into a van (or car) of someone you don't...

Welp. Just in time for holiday travel, Farz decided to tell us about the Tenerife Airport Disaster in 1977. Experienced pilots met with fog, a terrorist threat, fueling issues, confused air traffic controllers... All relatively small things that were in just the right order to cause the deadliest Plane Crash of all time. Anyone (like Taylor) who had a serious fear of flying to get over will have W...

C'est l'heure! It is time! Napoleon, the world-changing film comes out this week, and we are here to get you prepped! Join Taylor as we go through the basics, like, Napolean was not from France, he was from Corsica (which was taken over by France the year he was born, but still). He was also anywhere from 5'2 - 5'7 when the average French dude was 5'4 -- but like, at the same time George Washingto...

Today, we are re-visiting the story of Oscar Wilde and his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. In a time when it was even more harrowing being a gay person (than, like, places in the US today), Oscar Wilde's sexual orientation was an open secret. When his boyfriend's dad got the law involved, things got serious.     Join us for this fascinating trip into LGBTQ history!   Instagram: https://www....

In our penultimate volcano episode, we explore the 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in Washington State. It's lucky that it was a weekend and lucky that the land was mainly used for foresting, otherwise, the devastation could have been in the tens of thousands of lost lives like we've seen.  It's a story of forestation, preservation, and vulcanologists doing one of the most dangerous jobs out the...

This week, Farz takes us to 1980s Bhopal, India, where thousands of people were poisoned by the air outside of a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the Bhopal Disaster. It's just what you think might happen. The buck was passed over and over again, but essentially, water got into a gas tank, and the tank leaked; clouds of poison chased people and animals around the town leaving many dead and many mo...

Today, we are re-releasing the love story of Shah Jahan, who built one of the world's most beautiful buildings for his love, Mumtaz Mahal. The first two questions that come up on google for 'Taj Mahal' are 'Is the Taj Mahal a mosque or what?' and 'Who built Taj Mahal for why?' soooooo take a listen and learn the answers to both those questions and more!  Photos via the CC and Midjourney.  Instagra...

Join us as we step into the twisted world of Raymond Fernandez & Martha Beck in our latest podcast episode! We kick this week off with Taylor telling the stories of 5 of our most notorious Vice Presidents, Aaron Burr, Millard Fillmore, William Rufus King, Henry Wallace, and Spiro T. Agnew. Of the 49 people who have been VP some are nearly lost to history, while others are forever remembered for one or two special things (looking at you, Mr. Burr - could you IMAGINE if he could see a production of Hamilt...

Today, we are re-releasing Episode 6, Part 1 - the terrible story of Drew Peterson and his wives. Having ex-spouses isn't a red flag; stuff happens, nbd. Having several missing ex-spouses is never a good sign. Drew Peterson isn't the only Peterson we cover who murders their wives, so you can check our archives for that one (it's Scott).   Stay safe out there, friends! Remember, there are dozens of...

Today, we are covering the story of Agrippina the Younger, Nero's mum (who you will remember from Episode 2). History, as they say, is written by the victors and also by the male victors. So it's a miracle that we know anything about Agrippina at all! She was one of the last of the Julio-Claudians, so close to power as the sister to an Emperor, the wife/niece of the next Emperor, and the mother of...

Join us as Farz starts a terrifying journey into engineering disasters. Starting with the 1981 collapse of the Skywalk at the Kansas City Hyatt. During an evening dance in the lobby on July 17, two suspended walkways collapsed onto each other. One hundred fourteen people lost their lives, soaking the lobby in blood and becoming the worst structural disaster in the US until 9/11. What went so wrong...

Join us on a trip to a time before Alex Murdaugh was convicted of killing his wife and son - when we were just talking about his arrest and the horrible things he was accused of doing. We dig into this truly Southern Gothic tale - we imagine there are cicadas in the air, the humidity is hazy, and everyone is pretending to be nice but probably wants to murder you. Dramatically. Today's re-release i...

Webster's Dictionary defines a 'Maniac' as "a person who behaves in a wildly foolish, reckless, or dangerous manner." And boy, do we have a story about some maniacs for you! In 2007, in Ukraine's 4th largest city, three young men went on the fastest murder spree we've ever heard of. Apparently, it's possible to see one of their murders that they filmed, "Three Guys - One Hammer," but we haven't se...

We're back on Volcanoes! Join us for the 1902 eruption of Mt. Pelée on the Caribbean Island of Martinique. An "important" mayoral election is scheduled in St. Pierre ("The Paris of the West Indies") for May 11th, and the Government wants it to go off without a hitch. Unfortunately, Mt. Pelée has other ideas. Starting on April 23rd, ash starts falling from the sky. Over the next few days, boiling m...

We are re-releasing the story of Anne Boleyn and her husband, King Henry VIII. Anne didn't 'give' Henry a boy heir (like you can control that), and the Catholic Church wouldn't let them divorce. Instead of I don't know - keeping trying, or buying a boy baby from someone -- Henry decides to destroy his relationship with the Catholic Church, create the Church of England, accuse Anne of having an aff...

Today, we travel to the Northwest Passage - a route from Europe OVER Canada and on to Asia (and all the spices that come with that). Many tried and failed, but the most spectacular and haunting failure is that of the HMSs Terror and Erebus. The ships set sail in 1845 and were never seen again. From what we know, the crews were sick from scurvy, lead poisoning, and from being stuck in the ice for a...

Today in True Crime we head to Russia for the story of Alexander Pichushkin - The Chess Board Killer. No, he didn't just kill Knights and Rooks - instead, he attacked the most vulnerable people in post-Soviet Union Russia and tried to fill his chess board by killing 64 people. Before he was finally caught he got pretty damn close. We love Russian History so it tracks that we would also find a grea...

Today we re-visit Taylor's favorite love story. The doomed romantic relationship of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and the "#1 Girl Reporter in the Country" assigned to her, Lorena Hickok. Eleanor Roosevelt and FDR were a complicated couple who were perfect for each other in many ways. But, after five children, Eleanor discovered FDR's affair with a secretary - she offered divorce but ended up stayi...

Farz takes us to a small town in Iowa in 1912 when a family is murdered in the night. The usual suspects are rounded up, and some are tried, but the murders remain a mystery over 100 years later. Is it someone who jumped on a train never to be heard from again? A jealous business rival? A pervy preacher? Let us know what you think!   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doomedtofailpod/   Facebook...

We're staying spooky with one of the most Haunted Houses in America, San Jose's Winchester Mystery House! Taylor tries her best to spin a scary story -- but, of course, she totally doesn't believe in ghosts and also would never do a seance, probably. It's complicated. We also talk about the history of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Sarah Winchester herself. Pics via the Creative Commons...
