CiTR -- Exploding Head Movies

Synaptic Sandwich has been on CITR for as long as there has been electricity in the air. I first heard about them in 1997. Originally, I had plan to look more extensively at Walter Murch's mind-melting sound design for the film, but timing and misplacing my DVD made this difficult. If you haven't watched THX-1138 with the isolated score (in other word, with most actor dialogue removed), it's a brilliant listen. What's wrong? Are you now or have you ever been? 1. Lalo Schifrin: Logo/Be Happy Again [Jingle of the Future...

The dogs days are about to leave us, much like the blackberries and potentially the wasps. The giants spiders and corn await. This episode feels like it's tripping over its feet at times, yet charging full steam ahead, champing at the bit. More metaphors need to be mixed here, like a house of cards lined up like dominos in prepartion of checkmate. Let's get on with it. 1. Got a Girl: There's a Rev...

Depression is a messy old fog to get stuck in; it's sad to hear that Williams couldn't cope his demons especially in light of the recent diagnosis of early onset Parkinson's. If you feel this way, you are not alone and don't be afraid to ask for help. 1. The Almighty Rhombus: Fluorescent (Lucid Living, 2014) Cosmic Dave’s Record Factory 2. Arbutus: Canadian Synesthesia (Bedroom Safari, 2014) Vague...

I'm still processing the shocking news of the apparent suicide by comedian Robin Williams (1951-2014) so give me a week to sort out a tribute. 1. Kid Koala: Radio Nufonia (Some of My Best Friends are DJs, 2003) Ninja Tune 2. Gorillaz: Cloud of Unknowing [w. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: She's On It/Jack the Ripper (She's On It/Jack the Ripper 12", 201...

I listened to over 6 hours of music from the First World War for this episode; the music hall style is quite jaunty, which makes for an interesting contrast to the horrors of the trenches. Riverboat, ring your bell. And leave your message after the beep. Eyes right! 1. The Band of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment aka "The Pompadours" [bandmaster, Tim Parkinson]: Theme from Blackadder Goes...

The 19-year old version of gak would be very pleased with this episode. Another 19 years later, here we are, still pleased as punch. Still has his hair too. The songs commence when the mixer is finally powered on. 1, 2, 3, floor: 1. Caribou: Can't Do Without You [album version] (Our Love, 2014) City Slang/Merge 2. Dan Galway: Human Feelings (Human Feelings CD-R, 2012) self-released 3. DJ Dodger St...

It's always a blast to have a visitor in the studio; James aspires to have his own show at CITR some day and I'm sure he'll represent Brummie nicely. All apologies for not mentioning Higamos Hogamos on air. 1. Frank Sinatra: The Coffee Song (Ring-a-Ding-Ding!, 1961) Reprise 2. Aim Low & Les Beyond: String Theory (String Theory cassette, 2012) They Live We Sleep 3. Brasstronaut: Revelstoke Dam (Mea...
