The Other Half

If we told you Radio Rebel, a made for TV Disney movie, was an allegory for rising up against your oppressors, you'd probably say, "Yeah it has Rebel in the title." This movie has aged soo poorly, but fighting for the lower class to rise up and take charge never goes out of style. We regret to bring you Infamous. Bella Thorne and Jake Manely star as "influencers" who gain their fame through robbing dispensories. The moral of this story is crime doesn't pay...or is it? This is a movie punching high above what its actors, script and director are capable of handling. So it's bad, but is it fun bad? Listen to the podcast to find out! Come for the hot takes and s...

To end '90s month, the boys watch a Steven Spielberg classic, Hook! We'll be honest, we were not looking forward to this movie at all, but it turns out it's actually not as bad as we thought it would be.* Grab your pixie dust, stan for Rufio, and download our latest episode. There's only one requirement.... don't grow up! *Okay it wasn't fun to watch. Why is this movie so l...

My Girl is Boomer catnip. At least that's what we thought the movie was about at first. After discussing more of the plot deals, we still believe this movie was mostly beloved for its portrayal of "the good old days." That being said, it has a poorly fleshed-out surface-level coming of age tale. Also if you know nothing about this movie like Ethan did, please don't look anything up...

In our second week of '90s month, the boys talk about Fried Green Tomatoes. Eating fried unripe tomatoes could be considered a southern past-time, but you know what's also southern? Racism when you least expect it. Who knew this movie about two women's friendship (or maybe love?!) would also have a half-assed racism subplot? It's a weird clumsy movie but has a lot of heart even if...

It felt like Only Yesterday Mike was born. Okay, 1991 was quite a long time ago, but in the honor of Mike's birth year, we're watching movies from 1991 all month! Only Yesterday came out in Japan in 1991, but didn't actually make its way over to the states until 2016. One reason is that the Japanese voice acting was so critical to the animation process. You'll have to listen to thi...

To round off Netflix month we end on the raunchy comedy, The Package. The story of the package is a guy accidentally cuts off his own penis. The joke of The Package is a guy accidentally cut off his own penis. The quality of The Package makes us want to cut off our own penis'. From the studio that brought you Workaholics, The Package is one of the worst films we've seen this year. Check ou...

I Lost My Body is a French animated film that was modeled in 3D beforehand and then painted over. It's like rotoscoping! It's right up Ethan and Mike's ally, but are they going to enjoy the tale of Naoufel's hand trying to get back to his body? How could they not? Even the Academy gave it a nomination for the best-animated movie! Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to h...

Swiped may be the most poorly written, poorly acted, poorly delivered movie since we watched Love on a Leash. It's about a nerd who made a hook-up app that he later regrets! You should honestly just go watch it on Netflix. It's cheap, the premise makes no sense and none of the characters act like real people. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get...

While watching A Whisker Away, it dawns on Ethan and Mike, they are finally not watching masterpiece level anime for the podcast. A Whisker Away centers around a spunky girl who just can't make a friend at school. She wishes her crush would like her, but maybe if she became a cat, her crush would like her more..... This is something that would only make sense to a middle school student. This a...

The boys dive into a biopic about Rudy Ray Moore's quest to make a movie in Dolemite Is My Name. It's like The Disaster Artist if the main character was actually likable and you rooted for him. Rudy Ray Moore, played by Eddie Murphy, is a black entertainer who makes a name for himself in the independent comedy scene after creating a character named Dolemite. Honestly, it's a heartwarmi...

Ruh-roh, what if the Hanna Barbera cinematic universe is doomed because Scoob! released during a global pandemic? Or what if it's doomed because Scoob! isn't a good movie?! The boys both have differing opinions on previous Scooby-Doo iterations, but they seem to find common ground on this newly released animated feature. Despite a brand new cast doing a pretty good job and some great visua...

Leaving Las Vegas is a depressing movie. It was maybe a rough watch to see Nicolas Cage playing an alcoholic in what be his most perfectly cast role. Elisabeth Shue playing a sex worker is also an amazing performance. What's even more depressing is the writer of this movie's life. Man it's a fantastic movie though, but the plot is certainly a bummer. Check out https://shop.theotherhalf...

Phelan joins the podcast to talk about What a Girl Wants! It's one of those movies where a clumsy American girl goes to Britain because she wants to find her dad. Turns out dad is not only Colin Firth, but dad is also royalty! But poor Amanda Bynes doesn't fit in with British royalty so that's where the conflict comes in. Does she stay true to herself or blend in to make her new dad ha...

Serenity is absolutely wild and we love it. What's wild in a bad way and something we don't love is police brutality. Here is a Google doc full of donation links to your area. If you can't find one in your area donate to The Bail Project: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/the-bail-project It's wrong for innocent protesters standing up to tyranny to have to sit in jail because th...

For this episode of May-usical, the boys traveled to Ireland in the modern musical Once! Made on a shoestring budget with musicians playing as actors, Once follows a down on his luck musician who finds a connection with a Hungarian immigrant. She brings the musical spark back to him. It's a fantastic end to a wonderful month! Ethan also talks about that one time he was a busker. Check out http...

Double the Annie! For this episode of May-usical, we decided to have a little fun and pull a gimmick off that we did for the Miracle on 34th Street! We watched the first half of the original and the other half of the remake. Annie is one of the most famous musicals and has seeped into so many aspects of our culture. This could be because it's great for children or the fact that the songs are c...

The next episode of May-usical features special musical expert guest Lindsay who brought the extremely influential 1972 Cabaret. The movie follows Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and her companion Brian Roberts (Michael York) as they try and navigate Germany in 1931. Sally seems oblivious to the world around her and just wants to enjoy her time performing at the Cabaret. She's a brilliant metapho...

Let's start off May-usical with Guys and Dolls! May is now an entire month of musicals! Guys and Dolls was made in 1955 and it shows. The movie follows two gamblers (sinners) in New York and the ladies they love. Even if they don't know they love them yet. Marlin Brando plays a wealthy gambler who suddenly made a bet that he can actually lose! Frank Sinatra plays a guy who runs a floating...

That 1981 film Heartbeeps asks the question, what would robots do on a fun adventure? Andy Kaufman and Bernadette Peters dressed up in horrifying robot costumes to answer that question! This movie doesn't have much of a plot, but it did only make 2 million somehow at the box office. This movie is bizarre. I don't think robots could reflect human interaction if the movie doesn't even fu...

The Platform is a high concept sci-fi film from Spain. Each day a large platform comes from the ceiling with food on it. It starts fully furnished at the top and gets slowly consumed as it goes down each floor. Why does this exist? Who goes here? Well, that's the fun of the movie, isn't it? This movie is also super freaking dark so if you're feeling the quarantine blues, maybe don'...

The 1981 film, My Dinner With Andre, features Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn playing themselves. The entire movie consists of them talking to each other for over an hour at dinner. They mostly talk weirdly deep philosophy from a place of privilege in New York City. It's considered a classic film. Please listen to this podcast if you always want to hear two in-over-their-head dudes talk about...

The French film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, took film Twitter by storm when it released at the end of 2019 in select theaters. Now the boys watch the movie about involuntary isolation, love, suppression, women's rights, and what it means to have power. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your room some cool art! Support this podcast at — https://re...

Mia and Harrison from the Rewind and Reconsider podcast brought the boys Showgirls to watch! Like the film, not real life showgirls... that'd be kind of weird and also overwhelming. This movie, which was directed by Paul Verhoeven, is notoriously bad and was a massive flop in the box office. Luckily its badness gave it a sort of cult following. Imagine the director of in your face anti-war mov...

Okay, so we have to talk about the Cats movie. This is a movie Mike and Ethan have seen over 5 times each and for some reason, they just NEED to talk about it. Maybe it's because they've been stuck in a house together for over two weeks. Maybe they have digital toxoplasmosis. Whatever the reason here's a podcast that breaks the Other Half format and features two grown men in their late...
