The Other Half

Sony takes their shot at one of the most popular Spiderman villains Venom. It was critically panned, but critics aren't always right! The boys reexamine the Tom Hardy movie and see it is actually any good. Is this a stand-out Marvel movie that may actually have been ignored since it doesn't tie into the MUC? Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get y...

A classic American punk, bizarre movie, Repo Man defines genres to create a movie that could have only been made during the '80s. We follow suburban punk Otto (Emilio Estevez) as he gets recruited to become a repo man. From there the movie becomes so wild you'd have to hear us talk about it to believe it. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your...

The boys watch a bit of classic American movie making Bonnie and Clyde. Does this movie still hold up in 2021? The answer may be more shocking than a tommy gun ambush! Won't you be my Blue Valentine? The boys watch the "romantic" Blue Valentine for Valentine's Day. It stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams as two people who fell madly in love. In fact, it has one of the best endings of a movie that we've seen in a while. So if you're looking for love in all the wrong places, have a listen to this podcast episode. Check out https://shop....

Locked Down is the first "full" movie to be released during the COVID-19 pandemic. Did you notice how I mentioned during and not after? This movie comes out so quickly to comment on the lockdown, yet it already feels dated. Even more out of touch, the movie follows Anne Hatheway and Chiwetel Ejiofor as an affluent couple in London who suffer in their super nice house and begin acting irrat...

We Can Be Heroes is the latest kids movie from Robert Rodriguez and is actually a sequel/set in the same universe as Sharkboy and Lavagirl. (which we watched!) Weirdly it has almost nothing to do with Sharkboy and Lavagirl, but is more like Avengers for kids... and no one else. Robert Rodriguez made essentially a kids-only movie, so if you've already finished up puberty, I'd suggest stayin...

Tenet is the first Christopher Nolan movie we watched for the podcast. Just like Tenet, the episode about it is an overloaded, bloated mess! We hope you enjoy it. If we ever get any facts wrong about the movie, just remember to feel it and not think too hard about it. Tenet stars John David Washington as "Protagonist".... I can't write a synopsis of this film. Not with a character name...

Steel Magnolias has been on our watch list since we started the podcast. It's time to finally dive into a movie that's bound to make anyone cry.... unless you just watch the first half. The movie fits weirdly well along with our episodes of My Girl and Fried Green Tomatoes, movies made in the late 80s or early 90s set in the 50s when times were worse/better for some. Writing this out now,...

First Cow was one of the most critically acclaimed movies to come out last year. Does it hold up to our two critic's discerning eyes? The movie, much like this podcast, is about two guys trying to make their way in the barely settled wilderness during a gold rush. Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty in this cruel, uncaring world. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help s...

New Year, New You is a holiday horror movie all about how popularity and influencers can corrupt a friend group. It comes from the same director as Black Christmas 2019, Sophia Takal. It was apparently part of a series of Blumhouse movies called, Into the Darkness. We discuss the difference between her two films and Ethan launches his own health and fitness brand coupon code. Of course, it's o...

The Knight Before Christmas broke our streak of descent to good Christmas movies. Now we descend into the madness known as the Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe. (NCCU for shore) These movies all have zero actual stakes. Characters with almost no actual real problems. No actual villains. Only cozy vibes allowed in these movies. Oh and Vanessa Hudgens I guess. She's in most of them. Grab a c...

We reviewed the first Black Christmas movie for the podcast a whole four years ago. We decided to take a look at the third remake and much like our original episode, we came away divided. Maybe it even begs the question, are any of the Black Christmas movies good? Happy Holidays! Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your room some cool art! Jingle Jangle is the best Christmas present we can ask for! Not only is this not an abysmally bad Christmas movie, Jingle Jangle actually may have the chops to become a modern Christmas classic! Forrest Whittaker plays a disillusioned inventor, who needs the help of his granddaughter to save his workshop and his family's relationship. A fantastic movie for the whole family on Netflix and no on...

For our 300th episode, we watched The Other Half. We had no idea what this movie was going into it. Even afterward, we're not quite sure what it was about. Listen to our discussion of both halves of The Other Half on The Other Half podcast feed. Listen to us talk about your standard love story about two lovers getting together and then realizing they're both people with problems to work ou...

You've Got Mail is not only an extremely dated phrase, it's an extremely dated movie. It's a fascinating relic on how relationships have changed with the advent of the internet. A look into the past with how our relationships with megacorporations has changed and just romantic relationships in general. More than any other 90s movie, this is the one that's definitely the biggest tim...

The Science of Sleep was well regarded when it came out, but we're here to see if it aged well. Turns out, it hasn't. In fact, it's got some massive 500 Days of Summer vibes going on. Directed and written by Michel Gondry, the movie follows a down on his luck artist who decided (coerced) to move back home with his mom. He then meets a lady neighbor and becomes obsessed with her. That b...

We swear we didn't pick Finding Forrester to honor the late Sean Connery. It was just a happy little coincidence. Now this movie has some serious Good Will Hunting vibes in it. It's almost like it's the same director making almost the same movie. It also has Sean Connery making some classic memes. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your roo...

It's been over two years since we saw the original The Witches, but now we're back with The Witches from the mind of Robert Zemeckis. This time it has a little American twist! It's (for some reason) set during Jim Crow America. Should we throw this one back into the cauldron? Make sure to listen to the original The Witches episode so you can find all the differences! Check out https://...

We close out our Halloween Spooktacular with La Llorona, a genuinely terrifying movie. It follows a leader of Guatemala who had just been found guilty of war crimes, which he is haunted by. This movie deals with classism and racism in a haunting manner. Check it out! Also, check out this podcast. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your room some cool a...

The tagline of this movie, Crawl, is not "Later Gator". I'm upset. This week Mike and Ethan dive into the modern monster movie where gators go wild! This movie stars relatively minor actors, who are being hunted by (CGI) gators in Florida! Is it a spooky creature feature? Gotta listen to find out! Also listen for stories about Mr. Ed and some fun gator facts! Check out https://shop.the...

Time for us to take a look at The Legend of Hallowiian, a movie Ethan only heard about because he was eating at King's Hawiian in Torrance once. Turns out, it's King's Hawiian's first movie! Let's dive in and see how this movie is. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your room some cool art! Support this podcast at — https://redcircl...

We celebrate the first week of Spooktacular with Blumhouse's Fantasy Island! It's based on the old TV show of the same name from the '70s. Below you can see the intro to this wonderfully forgotten TV show. We can only hope people will forget about 2020s Fantasy Island as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x_QbVDlLbI Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the...

In honor of James Dean's death, Ethan and Mike watch the last movie he starred in, Giant. Clocking in at 3 hours and 21 minutes, Giant tells the story of a rancher family and how even the best-laid plans may go awry. Oh, it takes place in Texas so even for a movie in the 1950s, there's gonna be a touch of racism. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and...

Ethan and Mike watch the CLASSIC movie Sunset Boulevard. Does this movie made all the way back in the '50s still hold up? Turns out it's one of the best movies we've seen for the podcast in a while. Don't worry we still get up to our weird shannaigains because the '50s are ripe for making fun of! Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get y...

The writers behind this movie were not exactly #Alive while writing this paint by numbers zombie flick. Ethan and Mike watch a South Korean zombie movie set in our modern social media times. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like #Alive does anything new with the use of technology. In fact, this may be the most egregious error in this otherwise competent zombie movie. Apparently this movie was bi...
