The Other Half

As we move onto Resident Evil: Afterlife, the sheen of the Resident Evil movies is wearing thin. No matter how crazy the last movie ended, they always find a way to make the next movie a fairly boring concept. It's starting to feel like sitcom TV. For example, what if we retcon everything cool and interesting from Resident Evil: Extinction? Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to he...

We're hitting some difficulties as we move into the third movie of the Resident Evil franchise, known as Resident Evil: Extinction. This movie attempts to take its characters much more seriously than the other movies and in the process becomes just a little more boring. Also, it doesn't make sense at all? Like so much of it. All of it. My brain isn't functioning too well. Check out htt...

We've made it to the second Resident Evil movie, Resident Evil: Apocalypse! Finally, our favorite characters start showing up.... Jill Valentine and... Nemesis? We'll take them. This movie echos the events from the 3rd Resident Evil game and maybe not in the best way. Perhaps someone should have given these poor ladies some clothes. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help s...

Resident Evil is one of those franchises where they just keep coming. Both in terms of movies and in video games. We're starting off a new series called Watch 'till You Can't, where we watch a series of movies until both of us agree to stop it. We begin with the classic Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich series, Resident Evil, which is loosely based on the Capcom franchise. Check ou...

Reflections in a Golden Eye is drama on a military base. Everyone in this movie is a bad person so you just feel bad for Colonel's wife. Sorry no James bond in this movie. Only a super mumbly Marlon Brando. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your room some cool art! What Ever Happened to Baby Jane is one of Bette Davis' and Joan Crawford's most famous movies. It's the story of a former child star abusing her sister while her sister is trapped in her own house. It's creepy and it's great seeing Bette Davis become jokerfied. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help support the show and get your room some cool art! Support this...

M is one of the first police procedurals ever made as it follows a child serial killer's effect on an entire city. It somehow gets grimmer. Made in 1931 in Germany, this movie was considered too progressive and was banned by the Nazi party. It's absolutely wild watching a movie that's about 90 years old and see how human nature doesn't really change. Check out https://shop.theother...

We're starting off The Other Half's Summer Classic Movies with A Street Car Named Desire! A movie that's been on our list almost since we started this podcast, we're finally getting around to watching it! Does this nearly 70 year old movie hold up? That's such a long time. Marlon Brando is was handsome and loves to slur his words. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/...

It's the end of ladies month, so it's time to watch 1990's Mermaids, a coming-of-age tale starring Winona Ryder, Cher and Bob Hoskins. Oh you haven't heard of this movie? Neither had we. It's ultra '90s and very strange. We had a blast talking about it though. Sure the movie may sound boring, but our discussion of it is anything but. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodca...

My Best Friend's Wedding is one of Julia Robert's most famous films. After watching the movie, we realize it's because she plays a selfish psychopath trying to ruin her best friend's wedding. This is one of the strangest movies we watched for Ladies Month. It's so tonally opposed to itself it is fascinating to watch and talk about. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com...

What better way to celebrate Ladies Month than with the feminist Coyote Ugly! Unless the film isn't actually feminist and they filmed a raunchy sex scene to release later 5 years later. The movie is definitely of its time and is actually awful, but it's a fun little time capsule of the end of the '90s. Our second film in our themed, Ladies Month, is Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. A comedy about two 28-year-old women about to go to their high school reunion who haven't been "successful" in life What's a lady to do? Make up a lie about it! This movie is all about sticking up for your friends during thick and thin. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help...

Josie and the Pussycats was a major bomb at the box office, plus it was for girls so Mike and I skipped it in our youth. We take a trip back to 2001 to see if the movie deserves its recent cult status. Plus we watched a lot of Riverdale so we know all about the Archiverse backstory. It's the 6th Transformer movie, yet somehow Bumblebee became the best Transformers movie by a mile. This isn't the normal trajectory for movie sequels, but here we are with the heart warming tale of how Bumblebee got his voice. Now, it's a good Transformers movie, but is it a good movie on its own? You'll just have to listen to find out! Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.c...

Shrek is back for his fourth main adventure in Shrek Forever After! We find out if the fourth installment is as bad as some other number forth or if Dreamworks can keep the magic of the first movie going. Originally Shrek Forever After was marketed as Shrek: The Final Chapter in movie theaters. Domestic life bores Shrek. He finds Rumpelstiltskin, who grants him the wish of being a scary ogre again...

A Good Day to Die Hard is officially when the Die Hard franchise lost its way completely. Sure most people didn't like Die Hard 4, but it was that bad. This was an abysmal movie and betrays everything that made the original Die Hard trilogy great. John McClain isn't even fun in this movie, he just seems upset that he's here. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/ to help suppo...

Jaws the Revenge is the fourth movie in the Jaws movie franchise. It's absolutely bizzare. There's no logical explanation in the movie for why the shark wants revenge for another shark against the Brody family. There is one explaination though and it will shock you to your core. Cliffhanger stars Sylvester Stallone in the iconic early '90s action movie. He also wrote the screenplay! He's still as charming as ever, but does this movie actually hold up? I mean you have John Lithgow as the villain. Maybe it would have been better if pesky audience testing didn't get in the way. Anyway, enjoy the boy's talk about "Die Hard in the mountains." It's been an unprecedented Academy Award season this year. In this bonus episode, we go over all the nominees including the best short animated and live-action films. Let's see just how wrong we are, come Sunday. We have a great in-depth discussion, but hey it's nice to reflect on one of the weirdest yet high-quality best picture nominations in a while. Also we do an Oscar bingo! Enjoy...

The Father is the last Oscar-nominated movie and the only best picture nomination that we never heard of. We gave it a whirl and it's a beautifully haunting portrayal of dementia in our elders. It's also the first horror movie to be nominated for Best Pictures. Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman give a performance of a lifetime in this. If you just want a super existential sad we highly rec...

Another Oscar nominated movie we watched, that's supporting "depressing Oscar movies," is Judas and the Black Messiah. Maybe it's less depressing and more rage inducing. This is a movie based on a key moment Fred Hampton's life, his assassination and the mole who helped it. If you want another reason to be mad at the United States goverment, have a listen. Get your double bass pedals and earplugs out because the boys are talking about The Sound of Metal. This movie follows a metal drummer who begins to lose the one thing critical to his passion, his hearing. A strikingly grounded movie from a first-time director, Darius Marder. We continue trekking through the Oscar best picture nominations with Nomadland. A story about the fragility of human life, what it means to be human, and the best bucket to poop in when you're living in an RV. Based on real people, Nomadland features Francis McDormand trying to heal from losing her job and husband. It's absolutely beautiful. Check out https://shop.theotherhalfpodcast.com/...

It's Oscar (multi) month y'all! It's time for us to watch all the best picture nominations for the year 2021! We recorded this podcast before the nominations were announced, but we knew for sure Trial of the Chicago 7 would be an absolute shoo-in for the best picture nomination. It's historical. It's political. It's Aaron Sorkin. Turns out we were right. But does Aaron Sork...

Alita: Battle Angel is James Cameron's technology baby, but does it hold up even when he can't direct the movie? Robert Rodriguez brings us the American adaptation of the hit Japanese manga.
