Good news for the prospect of a repo rate cut 26.08.2024 2:06
This past week's big economic news was once again about inflation and interest rates. In South Africa, the consumer price inflation rate fell from 5.1% in June to 4.6% in July. In the US there are strong signs that they will cut interest rates in September. This episode is supported by the Bureau of Economic Research in Stellenbosch and the NWU Business School.

Hopefully retailers will start to smile again 16.08.2024 1:59
I often say that consumers are under pressure. A couple of years of a high inflation rate and high interest rates have cut discretionary spending to the bone. If consumers struggle, businesses struggle too. That is why the improvement in retail sales figures in June is such good news. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School.
Good news about US inflation 15.08.2024 2:07
There was good inflation news out of the US yesterday. July's inflation rate was 2.9%. This increased the chances that the Fed will cut their interest rate in September, and that was good for the rand/dollar exchange rate which was trading at R18.06 per dollar. This episode is supported by the NWU Business School.
Juliemaand se inflasiekoers was 2,9%.

It is difficult to pick winners 12.08.2024 1:50
I read last night that Jo-Anne van Dyk who won the silver medal in the javelin on Saturday night, did so without income support from Sascoc's Operation Excellence programme. We know that amateur athletes who perform at the highest level do not have it easy. I also know too little about who was funded in which ways to say much more about it, but it does show the important principle that it is d...
