The Talkies

So this episode was supposed to come out before Denis' version of Dune, but it didn't. So anyway, we talk about David Lynch's version of Dune...or some sort of version...it's a strange one...and not in a good way.

With the 4th Matrix movie on the horizons, we're beginning our breakdowns of the previous 3. Interesting generational gaps here...

How long has it been? Too long. Listen as we talk about the plot, the source material, David Lowery, and sexual attraction to Disney characters.

Today is Kenny's turn to pick a movie for us to deconstruct and analyze...although this movie doesn't really have much to deconstruct...so yeah.

We haven't seen a movie we all hate in while, so this was refreshing in a weird way. We talk about Zack Snyder, the older Justice League, character arcs, crowd sourcing movies, and a lot of other stuff.

Today, D breaks the rules and suggests a movie that he hasn't seen but Taylor and Kenny have. We discuss surrealism, emotional connection through cinema, and the fingerprint of film directors.

Kenny breaks the rules and chooses a movie that Taylor and D saw but he hasn't! We talk about detailed characters, filmmaking style, and recognition of greatness.

There was a new movie, so we watched it. We talk about directing choices, biopics, and Lakeith Stanfield.

Today, D goes against the rules a bit and picks a movie that he and Taylor have seen but Kenny has not. This is a strange pizza.

Today, Kenny picks a movie for us to watch. Strange Brew by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas is a bit of a departure from our usual kinds of movies but we still love talking about them. We talk about comedy filmmaking and internal movie logic.

Today is Taylor's turn to pick our movie and he chose Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker. We talk about the cinematography, types of filmmaking, and parallels to Annihilation.

This was our first episode of "Someone picks a movie that the others haven't seen" and it was never released! (we lost the footage, but we found it, so all good now). Taylor brings David Lynch's Blue Velvet for show and tell. 

D suggested that we watch Memories of Murder by Bong Joon-Ho. Listen to us gush for 34 min.

Kenny's pick for D and Taylor to watch is I Am Not Your Negro, a documentary by Raoul Peck covering the various speeches of James Baldwin and comparing them to MLK and Malcom X.

We're ending our coen-quest run prematurely and instead, this week, we take a look at Mank, the first new movie we've seen in a while.

Here we are again, ready to dive deep into what makes Lebowski such a legendary movie. We have a bit of an existential crisis too.

Today, we continue our Coenquest with one of the most beloved movies of all time: Fargo. We talk about theme, characters, and screenwriting.

Continuing on our CoenQuest, we have The Hudsucker Proxy. We've come out weirdly split on this movie. Is this a sign of the Coens being human?

Here we are with the our fourth Coen's bros film discussion: Barton Fink. We talk about all kinds of thematic elements, the surreal, and the Coen's omnipresent nihilism. 

Today on the Talkies, we have the epic continuation of Coencon...our deep dive into the Coen bros filmography....with gangster Movie: Miller's Crossing. The first Coen movie so far that we're actually a bit split on our opinions of the movie. There's some great discussion of how the Coens write vs how they shoot. This is probably one of the most important episodes when talking about the Coens.

Today, we continue on to our second movie of the Coen Bros filmography: Raising Arizona. D hasn't seen it, Taylor's seen it once, and Kenny's seen it a hundred or so times. Seems like the Coen's like themselves some good writing.

We never thought we were going to be able to watch this movie in a theater...and here we are! But here's a question we never thought we'd ask: Is Tenet good?

Well, here it is, our last Kubrick movie in our run of his filmography. To cap it off, we talk about the surprisingly old Paths of Glory and how Kubrick feels as a filmmaker considering the whole of what we've reviewed.
