The Relic Podcast

No fancy title needed.  Eric and I go way back.  I could go on and on about his accomplishments and records as a basketball player but that doesn't do this man justice.  He's more than that.  I'm grateful to call him a friend and a brother.  Enjoy.

Sometimes it's as simple as saying no.

It's not about if you'll fall.  You will.  We all do.  The real question is how you'll respond when you do.  My boy, John and I talk about life.  Ups, downs and laughs along the way.  

Life is a tough teacher.  It gives us the test first and then the lesson, right there for us to learn from, if we're willing to pay attention.  TacoBell and their Nachos BellGrande taught me a good one.

Marcus Aurelius wasn't lying when he said that.  I do my best to remind myself of that every day.  It's too easy to let the negative junk get in the way.  

My good friend Kermit stopped by.  It took a few attempts but we got it on wax.  We talk running, discipline, marriage, music and other things.  He's a guy who've I've had the privilege of learning from directly and indirectly and I'm grateful for his friendship.  There's a little bit of everything here so I know it can be of value.  It was to me, just like any time I talk...

We can't expect anything.  Life doesn't owe us.  It's not about what we feel we deserve but what we are willing to earn.  

What are you allowing to hurt or help you?   What are you allowing from yourself to either bring you down or bring you up?  Worth thinking about.

We've all been that person we’d make fun of if it was someone else.  The sooner we can get out of our own way, the better.  For everyone.  

We always have the option to quit, that's the easy choice.  Right when you think you want to quit, count to 10.  We always have more to give than we think.

We all have them.  They aren't special.  But we spend a lot of time running and hiding from them.  I've learned (the hard way) that it doesn't work.

We all have stuff that is worth letting go. Here's a simple story to help remind us.  

Every day, every step is a challenge to be better, if we choose.  Simple but not easy.  And almost impossible if we aren't honest with ourselves. While I was recording last week's episode I thought about my long time friend, Jon.  He's the epitome of doing what you love.  He's also made a living out of it.  That's not to say it still isn't work.  He's put in a lot of time and energy to get to where he's at.  He shares his insight on the jump from hobby to day job and some good stories in between.  Enjoy.

My brother has been drumming since as early as I can remember.  We are now pushin' 50 and he's still doing it.  Why?  Because he loves it.  Period.  He recognized something he was passionate about and pursed it.  We all can do that.  What's stopping you?  Chances are, nothing except excuses.  

You never know who's watching.  Be mindful of that because you may be impacting someone without even knowing it.

Sometimes that's how we treat life.  Like it's just a flip of the coin.  Like we don't have a say in what the little voices in our heads try to convince us of.  We don't have to listen to the they tell us.

It's easy to feel like life owes us something, it doesn't.  We owe life.   Jeff and his mindset reminds me of that every day.  Act without expectation. 

Life will never stop throwing obstacles and challenges at us.  It shouldn't be a surprise.  It doesn't make it any easier to handle when it does.   Know you aren't alone.  Hiding won't help.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Period.  We don't change when we are comfortable. Comfort can be a slippery slope.

For me creating a beat and living life go hand in hand.  Working at it works. Don't understand?  Have a listen.

When?  Right now, today.  That's all we have.  It might sound cliche' but it's true.  We either do it or we don't.  Simple as that.

Coming up on the New Year's Resolution season.  So many times we get too wrapped up in the idea of things instead of focusing on the actual work it takes to get them done.  It takes repetition and discipline.  It's not sexy.  Excitement and enthusiasm don't last.   Stay grounded.
