The Projectors

We’re starting off July HOT with a double theme and we’re reserving Mondays for movies from last year that had buzz that we have yet to see. We’ve been seeing some goods stuff lately and I don’t think July is gonna let up because we’re starting it off with S.S. Rajamouli’s new classic Telugu Indian epic “RRR” and holy shit it this something to see. Two Indian revolutionaries reimagined as great ri...

It’s time to say goodbye to this month’s theme, MOVIES ARE GAY, but we won’t be so cold about it like a department store purging all of it’s rainbow displays a day after the percieved profiteering window. We all know, deep in our hearts, that movies will always be gay. At least a little bit. We send off our theme with a movie that has an abundance of what so many modern movies lack, charm and char...

WARNING: THIS MOVIE AND DISCUSSION REFERENCE CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE Folks, we’re in the final week of MOVIES ARE GAY and if you thought we were gonna settle on Rainer Werner Fassbinder for our sad boy fix then you were very much mistaken. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (JoGoLe as his closest movie reviewer friends call him.) really went hard in the 2000s, and this movie he starred in alongside Brady Corbet...

As you probably know by now, MOVIES ARE GAY. While this movie doesn’t necessarily have a lot of gay subtext, it does star Rock Hudson The hunky Hollywood star who lived a closeted Hollywood life and sadly passed away of AIDS in the mid 80s. We reflect upon the late movie star and analyze his first hit film with close friend and on-screen partner Doris Day in Michael Gordon’s 1959 romantic comedy “...

We keep on going down the yellow brick road because this month MOVIES ARE GAY and  today we dive into a bleak and brutal selection from the prolific gay German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. A young working class gay man, Fox, wins the lottery and becomes targeted by a couple of upper class gay cons into falling in love and spending off all of his winnings. Twisted emotions, brutal relationshi...

Time to get to the movie theater once again for a superhero movie that is being dragged in the media for making a mere 130 MILLION DOLLAR OPENING WEEKEND. Yeah, it cost around 200 million but it seems like more people are just willing to wait for streaming and who can blame them? Yes, we watched “THE FLASH” by Andy Muschietti and starring the controversial Ezra Miller alongside some classic and co...

The more we look back on early Hollywood, the more certain we are in declaring that MOVIES ARE GAY. Movies Are Gay not just in June but 24 seven, 352 days a year. Cultural repression of adult sexuality is a terrible thing but sometimes we can look back with modernity on our side and realize what many likely missed when they first watched Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester in James Wale’s 1935 seque...

Don’t think just because Sean Baker did some shit with three iPhone 5s and Final Cut that you can just whip out your phone and make something this good because you can’t. Maybe some of you could, but most of you? No way.  MOVIES ARE GAY this month and we keep on truckin’ with a crafty and clever tale of two transgender sex workers on the streets of West Los Angeles. Hilarious and human, movies don...

It’s time for our MOVIE ROULETTE REVIEW and last time we hit on an offbeat romance category and, from there, randomly selected David O. Russell”s 2012 romantic comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro & Jacki Weaver. This also happens to be our very first movie discussion of a flick that was produced by The Weinstein Company (we think) and boy wil...

It’s time to get historical up in this piece because MOVIES ARE GAY this month and we got some early lesbian erotica on film and it comes from 1930s Germany of all places. It also features our earliest feature film discussion directed by a woman. We’re talking about Leontine Sagan’s German film about love in a girls school and the authoritarian forces that loom over it. No wonder the Nazi’s banned...

We keep things going for this month’s MOVIES ARE GAY theme with a film that was a turning point in the popularity of modern queer cinema. We’re talking about Gus Van Sant’s 1991 classic “My Own Private Idaho” starring the late great River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves in one of his earliest acclaimed roles playing street hustlers. Mikey (River Phoenix) is desperately coping with the intense loss he has...

Movies are Gay all month long and today’s selection features a squad of lesbian vampires who recruit our transgender protagonist with the goal of obtaining power that they reserve only for the ladies. No vampirism for the dudes out there scaring the hoes. Nuh uh. Who suck the blood from the world? GIRLS! An…interesting flick but muddled in lore with an overarching theme you could come up with afte...

Finally, it’s time. This month…MOVIES ARE GAY! The layered world of queer cinema and its influences are the topic and we will start off with a classic. Alfred Hitchcock (That old, alleged, queen) made a film based on a play that was loosely based upon the Leopold and Loeb true crime case. The film, “Rope” was considered a “failed experiment” by the director but upon it’s re-release decades later,...

This month is gonna get really gay but first, let’s hit the surf and sands and check out what’s in store for the movie scene this summer with our very first 2023 SUMMER PREVIEW TRAILERHUMP! Bob Sham and Angela tour beaches all over the world and watch 11 movie trailers (only three are original properties) and decide which few we will actually watch. It’s fun in the sun and the summer movie theater...

During Michael Mann May we watched modern crime dramas from the past four decades and in 2015 Mann gave us a film about cyber crime and hacking which also happens to be his last movie released as of this writing. (Ferrari is not quite out yet) Chris Hemsworth is a hacker and a fighter and kind of a detective but more than anything he is a hacker and he and agents from the United States and China m...

By the end of the week we will be full blown gay but in the last days of May we will leave with some good classic crime, namely this Robert Mitchum bonafide classic film noir directed by Jacques Tourneur. The smooth and stunning “Out of the Past” starring Mitchum, the stunning Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas. All the noir classic tropes you can imagine but done in the best possible way. And how bout t...

Michael Mann May selections have now entered the 21st Century and we got another LA crime thriller with 2004s “Collateral” starring Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise and a really chill ass Jada Pinkett Smith. Like, it seems like she would just listen to some R&B in the back of your cab, hitting a vape, and not judge you at all even though you’re a cabbie and she’s a big time lawyer. I’d smoke a doobie wit...

This one is a double dipper. That means the movie is in the movie theater and streaming at the same time. That’s our MOVIEHUMPERS slang we’re trying to get out there. We want to change culture just like Michael Jordan and the suits at Nike did in 1984 when they branded a shoe line around a rookie player that would go on to be one of the most competitive, driven and iconic athletes of all time. Kno...

We have an especially humpworthy, plus-sized, episode today because we’re not just reviewing one movie but SIX FULL LENGTH FILMS TOTAL! Yep, we picked six movies we saw within the last 6 or so months and we set a timer on each one. They run the gamut in genre and quality and we just might touch base on literally every ranking tier in our moviehump system. We also retroactively change the score of...

We’re actually doing a good job keeping up with the theme this month and it’s easy when your theme is “Michael Mann May” because we’re watching high end crime drama bangers all month long. Michael Mann crushed it out of the gate with “Thief”, found his style groove with “Manhunter” and all that good stuff culminates into Mann’s crime epic that would become his most infamous film. Of course, we’re...

We’re pairing some noir classic discussions with our Michael Mann May theme and we’re in store for some Robert Mitchum bangers up in this piece. Today we hit up a classic that is actor and stage producer Charles Laughton’s only feature film and it got so panned that he never directed another movie again. They didn’t know what they were talking about in 1955 because “The Night of the Hunter” starri...

At least once a month we review a movie that is completely randomly generated from a random movie title generator website and last time the movie gods randomly bestowed upon us an English black comedy about four bumbling Jihadis who seek to do a suicide bombing. An absurd, hilariously and strangely touching comedy directed by notorious satirist Chris Morris. His first film. We’re talking about the...

May’s theme is MICHAEL MANN MAY and next up on the docket is the crime thriller that also happens to be the first film adaptation of Thomas Harris’s “Hannibal Lector” novels. It’s not as well known as Jonathan Demme’s “Silence of the Lambs” but it stands out in its own special ways with some genuinely creepy and memorable performances. We’re talking about Michael Mann’s third feature film from 198...

Bob Sham and Angela went back to the movie theaters to review the show’s very first Marvel Studio’s movie! Summer movie season begins and we bid farewell to James Gunn and his quippy space adventurers. We’re talking “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and rest assured, there is a Faith No More song in it. How is the villain? What is the tone of the movie? IS IT WOKE!? IS IT (oh I don’t know) POLITICA...

Bob Sham and Angela are looking to get into more classic era discussions and since it’s Michael Mann May and we’re up in some noir, why not look back at some older Hollywood eras where there is no shortage of the genre. We’re not entirely sure how we missed Billy Wilder’s iconic film “Sunset Boulevard” but we at least we got to sit down and watch it for the very first time. Some mighty fine and ac...
