Jean-Paul Sartre famously believed that “hell is other people.” And other people often do make our lives harder. But if the devil is the real enemy, then the people around us are actually casualties in a larger, unseen war! How do we recognize the... When it comes to dealing with the devil, there are two extremes people can fall into: giving him too much blame or not enough recognition. How can we tell whether evil in our lives is from an outside antagonist, or simply from the evil impulses inside... It’s obvious that humans are physical creatures, but not always clear that we are spiritual beings as well. Witnessing a person’s death often serves to open our eyes to spiritual reality. There is nothing worse than being mistreated while you’re dependent on the care of someone else, on their turf, at their mercy. Planted deep within all humans is a desire to live forever because that’s what we were created to do! But ever since we were thrown out of the Garden, we’ve had to face the unkind reality of death. The natural world used to give us our cues of when to work and rest. They were provided in the rising and the setting of the sun, rain, sun, and the various seasons. The order of creation almost guaranteed a balance of work-play-rest for people (and... Over time, people have defined what it means to be human in different ways (rationality, creativity, ethics and morals). For Christians, we have looked to the Book of Genesis to understand the place of honor we’re given in and over creation. But in a... Gideon was a quietly faithful man. He kept his nose clean, honored God privately, and tried not to upset the status quo. His life was fine, if not great. In life we long for a sense of control and autonomy (power). But relationships can only thrive where there is mutual dependency and vulnerability. The most costly part of doing relationships is the requirement of continual, undeserved, complete forgiveness. People are gregarious by nature—we’re created for relationships. And while relationships are good, fulfilling, and transformative they’re also really difficult, perhaps the MOST difficult part of life. As a result some of us have said, “No thank you!”... Instead of seeing people who have differing views and experiences (even related to God and the Bible) as threats to our values, stability, or way of life, Jesus teaches us to see them as gifts. The divides that exist in our world seem so deep and wide that it’s easy to assume they are inevitable and unfixable. One of the other barriers that prevents us from coming together, even after we’ve gotten near and freed people from their scripts, is the belief that faithfulness requires us to take stances for what we believe is right and true. But, Jesus had a...
