None of us are blank slates or empty canvases. For better or worse, we have all had our identity influenced and our lives impacted by our family of origin. We then live in response by either receiving what we think is good and helpful, or rejecting what we think is bad or harmful. Generational Wisdom (4:1-9) – We receive some form of wisdom and instruction from previous generations. Solomon is a f...

God’s Heart is for His children. Any discussion about the words, will, or wisdom of God needs to start from a place of assuming God’s goodness and that His deepest desire is for His glory and our joy. What is most holy, honorably right, and pure is also what is most ultimately profitable for us. Our Heart’s Direction (3:1-12) – Our perspective and understanding are both limited and flawed. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. – Proverbs 1:7 Proverbs 1-2 We all have “words to live by”. We have gathered sage sayings and gleaned truisms from a variety of sources. For these words to be truly life giving they must actually lead us away from folly and towards flourishing. Kingly Wisdom (1:1-7) – In world of sin and brokenness, righteous...

We do not run alone – While each of us have an individual call to relentlessly run the race that is set before us, the Christian life is never intended to be lived out alone in isolation. We were made for communion with God and community with His people, yet we face barriers to both.

This is our time – We do not determine the times and places we run our leg of the race. Each season will have its unique challenges and joys for us to endure and experience. Wherever and whenever we find ourselves running, we can have great confidence God is with us and for us.

Words Matter - Cultures have identities described with language and words. Words can build us up or tear us down. They can bring comfort or condemnation. Because there is great power in words, specifically the Word of God, Paul writes to Timothy about how words impact our race.

Living out the plans and purpose God has for us will require intentionality and tenacity. While running our race there will always be obstacles and adversity which can easily distract us and, if we are not careful, derail us. Remaining focused is essential to our faithful flourishing.

We are lost on how to think about masculinity making it difficult for men to live out how God has made them. The world is relentlessly preaching various views of manhood that lead us to places of inadequacy as we struggle to hit an ever-moving target, excel at things that do not truly matter, or in discouragement fail to live out the purposes we have been given. Men, and women, need to be reminded...

Alone in prison, awaiting his final trial and likely execution, the apostle Paul writes his last letter to a long-time ministry partner and apprentice. His leg of the race is ending, and it is time to hand off the baton of faith.

The Story began in a lush garden, descended into a harsh wilderness of sin and despair, was dramatically altered by the death and resurrection of Jesus, “ends” in the splendor of a new forever city. In this place, there will be no more sin or death and God will again dwell with His people in harmony. For sin and death to be no more requires an absence of all that is evil and broken. With Jesus’ pr...

Risen, ascended, and promising His return, Jesus’ people remain for a purpose. Preach the Gospel of His kingdom, baptize those who believe, make disciples, and plant churches. For a small eclectic group of disciples more closely resembling the Island of Misfit Toys than The Avengers, this is a weighty commission with little chance of success without divine empowerment. The fearful faithful gathere...

400 years of silent darkness, including false saviors leading fizzled out rebellions, is broken. An angel appears to a young virgin women, a distant daughter of Eve. A child will come from you who will forgive sin and save His people. The promise from the garden is going to be realized, one from woman will come who will defeat Satan. An offspring from the family line of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob w...
