Kristýna Dočekalová and Lauren Sowers
Let's Chew the Fat
It's us, Lauren and Kristýna. We are international students studying in Madrid and we met on our first day of university. After two weeks of knowing each other and countless podcast-worthy conversations (obviously) we decided to start recording. We want to document our experience living abroad, facing the challenges of being a university student and the roller coaster that is life in your 20s. We hope these weekly episodes offer support, comfort or distraction to you. Music, emotions, books, culture shocks, studying, stress, insecurities, loneliness, independence – we cover it all.

#32 Going home for 3 months 19.06.2022 47:28
Lauren went finally home as well, back to Switzerland! So now the both of us are back in our hometowns, enjoying every second of it. In the beginning of this episode, we raved about the concerts we went to. Lauren saw Seafret and Kristýna was able to squeeze 2 concerts into one single week: Yungblud and Imagine Dragons. From then on, all we've been listening to on repeat are those 3 music artists...
#31 Our plans for the summer 12.06.2022 48:11
We're back with the remotely recorded podcast episodes. We've done all of our final exams, the semester's officially over and Kristyna's already back home in the Czech Republic. Lauren's enjoying her last days in Madrid while also still trying her best to recover from being sick (it's not going so well, but we'll get there). And: Summer has begun! That's why, for this episode, we decided to talk a...
#30 Our thirtieth episode.. How did we get here?! 05.06.2022 52:48
We were so excited to go to a concert, but of course, fate wasn’t on our side. We got stuck in an elevator on our way there. But luckily, we made it safe and sound and it was amazing! We also spent some time with our friends, worked and studied A LOT. It was our final week of exams, which has been pretty stressful on us. But we ended the week with statistics exam, which we crammed for insanely. An...
#29 Being lonely and/or alone 29.05.2022 44:43
This past week was quite full: We studied for and did another Statistics midterm. We played Paddle (and won!). Kristyna watched the hockey tournament, Lauren watched Eurovision. We organised a Birthday surprise that included collective painting (as Kristyna likes to call it), a great self-made cake, a Sidra pouring challenge, and balloons. It also required Lauren's best acting skills. And we had m...
#28 Questions from friends & family 22.05.2022 54:45
Last week, it was Kristýna’s birthday so we celebrated it by going to a rooftop bar. She had her last visitors this semester so she spent the weekend with them. We also had our last couple of classes of this semester, which feels really weird because it doesn’t seem like a long time ago, when we just started the second semester of university abroad in Madrid. With the semetser ending comes the dre...
#27 Kristýna's 20 things she learned in 20 years 15.05.2022 51:42
The semester's almost over: So, we're finishing off our classes and handing in our last assignments. Over the weekend, Kristýna watched the Lacrosse Tournament in her home country, which lead to her feeling very homesick, as she was missing out on a tradition that means a lot to her, her family and her friends back home. On Sunday, Lauren went to a Feria in Madrid where she got to enjoy food, flam...
#26 Expect the unexpected 08.05.2022 57:47
Again, we worked on a lot of assignments, complained about the weather in Madrid and instead of participating on completing a test, Kristýna was watching lacrosse games (there was a tournament going on in Chequia). So yeah, the first part was really interesting… For the main part, the topic this week is expectations we had about studying abroad even before deciding to do it or knowing that we were...
#25 Having visitors: The good and the (unexpected) bad 01.05.2022 58:47
This podcast was recorded right after we had a week off from university because of Semana Santa. We both had visitors, which means our week was packed. That's why we decided to limit ourselves to just sharing the highlights with you. Of course, we spend a lot of time talking about the food we consumed, as this was a key feature of this past week. Pizza, sushi, brunch, crepes... we had it all. We a...
#24 Our first guest: Gabriele aka @thelithuanianabroad 17.04.2022 57:47
Kristýna had her sister visiting during the week and it was basically a food trip. They went to a sushi place, got churros, bubble tea and an amazing pizza, where Lauren actually went as well. There is a 5 minute talk only about the pizza ('cause it was absolutely delicious), so be aware. For the main part of the episode, we invitied a first official guest on the podcast! Gabriele is a Lithuanian...
#23 Giving advice to our past selves 10.04.2022 50:42
This past week, Kristyna's sister came to visit. So, the two of them spent the past couple of days going from one restaurant to another. Bubble tea, sushi, a picnic... Her sister's visit was filled with great food. We also discovered a new pizza restaurant and – of course – spent an unreasonable amount of time discussing this newly discovered pizza. Cause it was pretty amazing. Other than that, we...
#22 Deep dive on Reddit 03.04.2022 1:00:32
The last friday is a complete blur for us but the weekend was amazing. Kristýna went grocery shopping saying “it was freaking amazing”, and also went to an Erasmus party and Lauren worked on school assignments. For this episode, we went on Reddit and found a bunch of stories or questions regarding being an international student, living abroad, trying to get into a university abroad, studying...
#21 The things we miss... 27.03.2022 50:56
A lot happened this past week: We talk about Lauren's sister visiting her in Madrid, a Sahara sandstorm (Kristyna was pretty confused when she woke up that morning), and a two conferences – one amazing, the other a little less enjoyable. For this episode's main topic we decided to dive into everything we miss from back home after moving abroad. Sometimes it's the smallest things you miss the most....
#20 Who are we? – Taking a personality test... 20.03.2022 58:03
We haven’t done anything special this past week. The main activity was basically just working for the both of us. So we took advantage of the first part of the episode and ranted about our teachers changing our schedule (for the one week where Lauren has a visitor) and disappointing masterclass. In this episode we go over our results from the 16 personalities test. Most of the things were not real...
#19 We talk about the war in Ukraine 13.03.2022 1:01:00
This week, we look back at last minute assignments and just generally bad time management. We talk about the two of us getting bagels with Lauren’s dad. (This was also Kristyna’s first time meeting him!) We also talk about things such as almond trees (they’re blossoming!), a picnic (isn’t there always a picnic…), a protest, and a dinner with our classmates (which was a lot of fun, even though the...
#18 Maintaining relationships from a distance 06.03.2022 59:45
New episode interrupted by pizza making (an unsuccessful one unfortunately) is all about maintaining relationships with family and hometown friends while living and studying abroad. It is difficult to keep in touch while you're thousands of kilometers away from yourt loved ones. You have to make time, treat it as an actual event and accept that you're probably not going to talk to your closest one...
#17 A random collection of questions 27.02.2022 58:49
As is the case every week, we struggled to remember what we'd spent the days following up to our recording session doing: Getting our nails done, getting unreasonably excited about buying a cutting board and a garlic press (we're adults now, apparently), and preparing for a presentation in Spanish. This episode is a fun one - we felt like this was needed after a series of quite emotional ones. We...
#16 Heading into the second semester of uni 20.02.2022 49:29
We went to the best reviewed churros place in Madrid and afterwards, we also got bubble tea (again). Both of it was amazing, even though we were a bit sick from all the sugar :D. Sunday turned out to be quite stressful, since we finally realised we are in fact university students and should be doing some work. Our classmate had her birthday, which we celebrated by having a picnic in a park and pla...
#15 Going back to Madrid 13.02.2022 40:53
Saying goodbye to family and friends, enjoying (or trying to enjoy) the last few days in our hometown, our trip back to Madrid... We cover a lot in this episode's recap of the previous week. For the main topic, we talk about how we felt before coming back to Madrid for the beginning of the new semester, how our trip went and how we experienced the first couple of days back in Spain. Excitement, fe...
#14 Cooking struggles, pt. 2 (Please give us new recipes) 06.02.2022 52:37
Kristýna had her last get together with friends before leaving to go to Spain, enjoyed another sauna session, got a new job and even had her training! Lauren’s week was also very interesting. She got inspired by Kristýna and decided to do a fun photoshoot with her hometown friend. We quickly mention our current covid vaccine situation and compare our reactions. A while ago, we talked about our coo...
#13 A look back (1st semester review) 30.01.2022 1:23:41
In this week's episode, we talk about another week of in our lives back in our hometowns: Dinners with family and friends, enjoying the snow, and a lot (a lot!) of walks. For some reason. As the title says, we then take a look back at our first semester studying Journalism in Madrid. We talk about our expectations, hopes and fears. We introduce all of our courses, discuss our first impressions and...
#12 All about languages 23.01.2022 1:00:20
In the first part of this episode, we quickly sumed up what we’ve been doing the last couple of days, as usual and then spontaneously dove into reality shows and series that we’ve been watching lately. A part of this conversation was a not so subtle critique of “Emily in Paris” season 2 - we are really not happy about it. For the main part, we went down the memory lane of how and which and when we...
#11 We're going home (Christmas break) 16.01.2022 1:18:29
We took a short break - but we're back now! We're currently recording long distance from our hometowns: Kristyna's in the Czech Republic and Lauren's in Switzerland. In this episode, we take a look back and talk about our last week studying in Madrid (final exam week, of course), our flights back to our home countries and how we experienced the first couple of days after our arrival. For the...
#10 Christmas is almost here!! 19.12.2021 1:09:59
Even though we didn't plan on going to the centre before leaving, we didn't want to miss Madrid's Christmas atmosphere, so we decided to visit the centre one last time. We followed the Christmas Light Walk, mainly along Gran Vía, and it was absolutely beautiful! We finally felt like it was Christmas, which is what we were looking for. Our goal for this visit was also to get some presents for...
#9 Mental health talk 12.12.2021 57:42
A quick disclaimer to start off with: This episode is a bit chaotic, we were in a weird and tumultuous mood while recording it... Of course, we catch you up on everything uni related: final exams, last assignments, and random classes. We talk about Lauren's Birthday adventure: a karaoke experience that (as is often the case) didn't quite go as planned, but still ended up being a lot of fun.&...
#8 Lauren's 22 things she learned in 22 years 05.12.2021 52:48
As we get closer to the end of semester, more and more stressful time is approaching. Exams are starting to get more frequent, assignments have to be handed in, etc. You know the drill, right? But with this comes also something exciting, which is Christmas and everything around it. This past weekend, we went to a botanical garden in Madrid that was was lit up with beautiful lights and it was truly...
