In Each Retelling

Send us Fan Mail Harold? They're lesbians. What better time than the holiday season for us to get another wish, this time another wild card wish from Ellie, and what other wish could Ellie have given us but the 2015 queer cinema Christmas classic, Carol , the sole film adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel (though not for lack of trying by 1950s Hollywood). Join them with Sam and Beth...

Send us Fan Mail At long last, we've reached the Emerald City of our exploration of the Oz mythos with the musical that made your hostess about 25-50% of who fae are today,  Wicked: The Musical , the blockbuster musical that has been astounding audiences for 20 years, and is now being made into a duology of films. Join Jas, River, Callie, and Sam as we unpack whether the plot makes any sense...

Send us Fan Mail As moviegoing audiences defy gravity with Wicked: Part One , we at In Each Retelling must explore how we got the beloved musical that's sweeping the nation...including going back to the novel written by Gregory Maguire in the 90s that our hostess has... complicated feelings about that faer going to need her friends Adele and Amy to help faer unpack.  The following podcast is...

Send us Fan Mail The yellow brick road is looking a little worse for wear in this entry of Oz Month, where Jas must finally tackle the infamous flop that traumatized even the hardy Gen X kids, Return to Oz ...but is it really as awful as its reputation, or is this a hidden gem of whimsigoth goodness that deserves more love? Join Jas with Return to Oz superfan Charley, just Oz in general superfan B...

Send us Fan Mail In honor of a certain film coming in through the Western sky, the IER gang is heading over the rainbow and down the Yellow Brick Road, and where else could we start than the technical, artistic marvel that was the 1939 film starring Judy Garland. Join Jas, River, Addie, Leif, and Matt in discussing all the ways this movie is a little bit more of a miracle than average, the ways it...

Send us Fan Mail Dracula Weekly finally returns (ironically after a Monster Month length hiatus, oops), and all is not right in both the novel AND among our intrepid heroines, as someone has replaced a member of our group, and another someone intends to steal that someone's copy of  Dracula Daily ! Which is at least more cheerful than Mina losing her will to live, and a rather dull road trip...

Send us Fan Mail We wrap up Monster Month 2: The Dead are Rising with our Halloween Monster Mash episode (shhhh it's still technically Spooky Weekend, let us have this), and what else COULD we pick for that in strike free times but 2004's  Van Helsing , which much like  The Mummy (2017) is a much maligned attempt to reboot the Universal Monsters...but is it good actually?...probably not....

Send us Fan Mail Monster Month continues with Sam Marchiony's birthday wish for us to discuss the 1989 adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera , starring Robert Englund, and unfairly considered to be an attempt to make a Nightmare on Elm Street style Phantom , which is likely why it didn't get the credit it deserves. Join Jas, Sam, and Callie as we relish the slasher, dark academic, Labyr...

Send us Fan Mail Trick or Treat comes early this year, dear listeners, with another IER/WETC collaboration as Jas discusses Ilana's upcoming adaptation of the JR Planche's theatrical adaptation of Polidori's The Vampyre ! Here we talk about one of the lesser known early vampires, and how Worlds Elsewhere plans to put its own Worlds Elsewhere spin on the play that got massively overs...

Send us Fan Mail Time for the most dead risingest entry in Monster Month 2: The Dead Are Rising, with the now 20 year old comedy classic, Shaun of the Dead , a deconstruction/parody of zombie films in general, and therefore borrows a lot from Night of the Living Dead. If you're here, you already know how hilarious this movie is...but have you ever considered all of the themes and how relevant...

Send us Fan Mail Monster Month 2: The Dead Are Rising continues with giggling slumber party energy as Jas, River, Callie, Kyle, and Charley all discuss the rare instant cult classic, Lisa Frankenstein , and how it's a more faithful adaptation of the original novel than even the host initially thought, how it also replicates the dynamic of Mary and Percy Shelley, and how it's a perfectly...

Send us Fan Mail Welcome to Monster Month 2: The Dead are Rising, and a new world of gods and monsters! For our very first wish episode, as requested by Callie, we are beginning October with a discussion of the much reviled Tom Cruise vehicle disguised as what could've started the Dark Universe franchise, The Mummy (2017) . Join Jas, Callie, and newcomer Sabrina as they discuss what went wron...

Send us Fan Mail This week was 90 pages long and very heavy in terms of subject matter. On the one hand, all of the people who want to fight Dracula for Lucy's memory are getting together. On the other hand, Renfield finally gets some depth just before his death and Mina is Dracula's next victim... The following podcast is for entertainment purposes only. The views and opinions expressed...

Send us Fan Mail Once again we're running a little late on future episodes, so enjoy some outtakes from the  Stray Gods episode! Find my guests and their stuff! Send us Fan Mail Good news: Ellie finally admits to actually being Carmilla, the Harkers know that Dracula was real, and Van Helsing continues to be a cinnamon roll among vampire slayers. Bad News: Laura has been kidnapped by Dracula, Seward is a stubborn skeptic, and Lucy is probably eating kids. Surely Dracula can be defeated under these conditions. Also a special announcement at the end about u...

Send us Fan Mail It's the week of Friday the 13th and no one's luck in this novel has improved at all. Lucy continues to fade away, and Van Helsing desperately tries to save her from not just Dracula, but her own mother's attempts to get rid of her garlic flowers. Additionally, we suggest that vampire hunters should start more restaurants with lots of garlic recipes. The following p...

Send us Fan Mail Jas and Callie may be despondent over happenings on a whole other podcast, but not to worry, there's plenty of misery to go around in Dracula as well, with a whopping four deaths, including our beloved Lucy Westenra. About the only levity we have is Callie's silly jokes and one very good wolfy boy...and also Jas, Shami, and Callie are ready to address the giant panther i...

Send us Fan Mail On the 23rd day in the month of September, in a year from a decade not too long before our own, a threat to the sanctity of a cult classic musical came into being...or did it? Dear listeners, your host did not expect her friends to be so eager to read her silly little sequel to one of her favorite musicals, but they did, and now you get to hear this utter nonsense! The following p...

Send us Fan Mail It is now officially the equinox and sadly Hadestown (Act II) is still in progress, but the good news is there's a whole hour of bonus goofs and tangents that I can share while Hades and Persephone reunite and hopefully bring autumn to the land instead of rising temperatures that remind us that sadly no, Orpheus did not stop climate change. Clips Used "Road to Hell (Repr...

Send us Fan Mail We may have forgotten a little thing called spring, but that doesn't mean we can't still discuss the highly acclaimed and highly popular musical adaptation of the tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice, that also saw fit to make it all about the reason for the autumn season, Hades & Persephone. In the kind of jam packed episode we will  never allow to happen again, hear us...

Send us Fan Mail Because talking about 10 Things I Hate About You made us yearn for a simpler time when mid budget movies that set Shakespeare plays in high school existed, we've decided to pitch our own versions! Could King Lear be about Texas high school football? Can you thread the needle between the very different moods of a Measure for Measure adaptation? What if someone decided the answ...

Send us Fan Mail It's the 13th episode, and perhaps that's why Dr. Seward's having such a rough week between potentially watching the girl he loves die, and Renfield having more and more mental breakdowns because Dracula abandoned him...but truthfully, we don't care so much about Seward, so Jas, Ellie, and Shami find themselves discussing Van Helsing finally arriving, geography...

Send us Fan Mail It's officially back to school season, and without a strike to stop us, we can finally discuss the absolute high school rom com classic,  10 Things I Hate About You . Join Jas, Sam, Callie, and River in discussing how Petruchio  wishes he was Patrick Verona, how much we long for the return of the mid budget movie,  especially  rom coms, and how such a hateful play giving us a...

Send us Fan Mail Good news, Shami's back, and is torturing Dracula with disco music. Bad news, this is a fairly short segment again where Arthur finally admits something's wrong with his fiancee. So instead we end up talking a lot about vampiric animals, where the hell Quincey's been, and how we promise we're not sponsored by Are You Afraid of the Dark Universe . The following...

Send us Fan Mail Lightning Thief Month comes to an end with arguably the adaptation that finally did this story justice, the Disney+ series  Percy Jackson and the Olympians . Here Jas, River, Leif, and for the very first time Edric, will discuss all the ways this brilliant series is both loyal to its source material, and manages to update it in a way that makes this nearly 20 year old story feel f...
