Hobby Beekeeping
Turning a 50 acre cash crop farm back to a wildflower bee sanctuary and business. Join me as I explain each week what we are doing and why we are bee "helpers" and not bee keepers. The name change on February 25, 2024, is reflected in the science that for me makes most sense. The goal is to listen to all aspects of beekeeping and to be an open and honest place for everyone to share their experience. The focus for our work and research continues to be on the conversion of the 50 acre farm back to nature and the re-wilding of lands in Nova Scotia. Treatment Free best describes what we are doing....

Farm Summary for July 29.07.2024 9:32
Here's an update on how the hives are doing.
5 Queen Cells on One Frame This Works 22.07.2024 8:26
The 2 frame nuc idea for queen rearing was an initial hit. It is a hybrid walkaway technique I guess, where I placed one frame of eggs and brood in a 2 frame nuc with some food. Seven days later I was able to create 3 hives from these frames. Here's what happened.
What Does Pollen Coming in Tell you About Hive Health 14.07.2024 8:57
If pollen is coming into your hive does that mean your hive is healthy? Maybe yes maybe no. Here is the discussion.
Queen Castle and 2 Frame Nucs 08.07.2024 10:28
Looking at trying the Queen Castle for the first time and with following boards creating 2 frame nucs. First time trying this, but hoping it will reduce the workload and increase the success rate in doing July splits.

Queen Discoveries Part 2 20.05.2024 10:46

This Could Change Everything 11.05.2024 16:18
It appears that queens change the type and size of their eggs based on environmental conditions. It also appears to be true that queens lay different eggs into queen cups than the regular eggs she would lay in a worker cell. I explore how this could be a game changer to beekeeping and understanding what may help bees survive.
