I get great pleasure in finding things in Nature that brighten up the landscape, like the last of the bee balm flowers hanging on until a killing frost. This form of pleasure is what I call heart-based rather than ego-based. I wanted to clear new growth away from a storage shed before it totally blocked the access, so I spent a couple of hours on two afternoons to slowly clear away the growth. The fall equinox arrives today, so summer is officially over. There have been hints of change for those who pay attention. We also get hints of changes about to take place in our lives, so knowing that helps us prepare. Some people do not want to change and get caught unprepared. The pink clover blossoms still in bloom reminded me of the sweetness I experience in life, like the maple syrup I drizzle on my gluten free French toast in the morning. It is pure joy to discover the surrounding beauty, including people who share their individuality with others, knowing not everyone will understand. The winterberries growing close to our stone walls are loaded with red berries that will last into winter. I look forward to enjoying them every year. Our little 30+ year-old crabapple tree has a bountiful crop of tiny red apples this year. They are too small for human consumption, but the birds enjoy them. Several years ago, we returned from a week’s vacation and our first visit up to the cabin literally took our breath away when we saw the view that loggers had revealed in their recent cut. This summer we have had several interruptions in accomplishing our goals, but we managed to start improving a trail by using some no value books that would have gone to the dump as fill for low spots in an old skidder road with the intention of creating a new trail. Recently I cut down a tall slender birch tree that was leaning over the old road and causing a potential winter hazard when heavy snow arrives. After I cleaned up the branches, I looked back and another tree had taken its place. It had been leaning on the first one. I was opening the gate to the Cabin driveway when I discovered a tiny flower hiding in the tall grass under my feet. According to a flower identifier, it is called a purple false foxglove. After three hours of trying to find the trail, the Bob Cat, our Utility Vehicle, stopped running two hundred feet from our destination.
