Divine Intimacy Meditations 253-256,  reflect on the love of God as the primary force of the spiritual life, focusing on its absolute precept and its role as the source of all virtue. The meditations explain that because God is infinite, the commandment to love Him admits of no limit, requiring a total and lifelong gift of the heart. True charity is defined as an act of the will rather than a pass...

Divine Intimacy Meditations 250–251, "The Precept of Charity" and "The Practice of Charity," transition the soul from the contemplation of the Divine Perfections to the active exercise of the theological virtues. These reflections define charity as the supernatural habit facilitating actual union with the Triune God.  Contemplation and Castanets is a podcast dedicated to Carmelite spirituality and...

Reflections on Divine Intimacy: The Theological Virtue of Hope The meditations in  Divine Intimacy  246–249 manifest a singular spiritual ascent through “Hope,” “The Motive for Hope,” “The Test of Hope,” and “Boundless Hope.” This theological arc grounds the soul’s confidence not in personal merit, but in God’s  omnipotentia auxilians , or helping omnipotence. The narrative delineates how hope pur...

Faith is a supernatural "leap in the dark" requiring a heroic assent. This obscurity is strategically vital; lacking intellectual evidence, the will is liberated to offer a truly loving adherence. In this darkness, the soul’s merit is won, transforming human powerlessness into a springboard toward God. Even a mustard-seed conviction thus moves spiritual mountains, turning anguish into gl...

Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The interior soul is invited to follow Mary into the depths of the contemplative life, where Carmel signifies a garden of virtues. By silencing the noise of the passions, the heart becomes a solitary sanctuary for the divine presence. This meditation presents Mary’s soul as an "oasis of silence and peace" amidst worldly tumult. Here, the soul finds its true secu...

Meditation 241, “Faith,” describes this virtue as a mystical entry into the Divine way of knowing. Elevating the intellect above sensory perceptions, faith acts as a celestial clarity and a “beginning of eternal life,” as St. Thomas Aquinas teaches. This participation in the Trinity's interior life shifts our focus from passing shadows to the transcendent, allowing the soul to share in the thought...

In Meditation 240, “Divine Omnipotence,” we contemplate God’s absolute sovereignty and His creative fiat. Unlike empty human speech, the divine word is infallibly effective, drawing good even from evil. This infinite power, always at the service of His goodness, establishes the foundation for the interior life, inviting the receptive heart to rest in His constant action. Our radical impotence requ...

In this episode, we reflect on Meditation 239, “Divine Providence,” from Divine Intimacy. The hosts consider how Christian confidence rests in God's wise and personal care, even when the purpose of a difficult circumstance remains hidden. Their discussion connects Providence with faith, patience, and the freedom to meet ordinary responsibilities without surrendering to anxiety. This reflection...
