I am a great fan of watching the birds that come to our feeders and the birds that inhabit the birdhouse on the top of the mountain, especially the bluebirds. I am always looking for something different when I hike in Nature, and one day recently I discovered a big egg lying in the middle of the trail. The catmint flowers are in full bloom and help brighten up the Ormond Gardens with several beautiful bouquets. Even though the blossoms are small, collectively they create patches of color. On a recent scenic railroad trip through Crawford North, I could see the opening that the train would soon be traveling between the mountains. It was discovered over two hundred years ago by early explorers of the mountains. Like the song. “Red Roses for a Blue Lady”, a red rose can brighten up any day. Actually, most any flower can help bring cheer to oneself and others when received or given as a symbol of love and gratitude. We have recently had a lot of rain which softened the soil and weighed down the tree leaves. Add high winds to the mix and some trees may topple. One of them cracked loudly as it fell, landing twenty feet from our house. One of my sisters sent me a photo of a sunrise recently because she knew I would like it. I am inspired every day by Nature. That led to thinking of people who inspire me with their acts of kindness. The record-setting rain of last week has created long lasting effects on the road that connects us to communities beyond. I watch an endless parade of repair vehicles passing by as state and local employees work long hours to repair the damage. Our son spent a good part of the weekend mowing the grass at our house and at the Center. We expanded the lawn area last year and some of that area still has some rocks that are hard to mow over. The day afterwards we saw a deer cleaning up the spot our son couldn’t mow. I think of people that have gone as far as they can on a project and then something steps in to finish it. Many people have a certain tune that plays in their head whether they want to hear it or not. The same can be true with conversations. The other day my wife heard a clang from the ladders in the late afternoon. I grabbed my camera and just caught a picture of a yearly bear trying to find his own way. As I record this Message, the recent five inches of rain has washed out the road, making it necessary to take an hour’s detour for a drive that normally takes ten minutes. The first yellow day lilies are now open. They bring a smile to my face as I know I will be treated to a succession of different varieties of lilies all the way through the fall, each bloom lasting just one day. First, I saw a fresh footprint and then the game camera caught a photo of a young male deer, and I knew that one of my childhood favorites stories was alive and well, not only in my heart but on the mountain. We have black bears here that are a problem when it comes to leaving food, including bird feeders, or garbage where they can get their paws on it. We like to feed the birds, and our feeders are on the second level of the house, so I put out a defense of unstable ladders that tip when they try to climb up. We have a bridal wreath in full bloom that we transplanted from my parents’ home that had been brought there by my great aunt from her family homestead. It is from a different period. A good friend sent me a picture he recently took with the lupine in bloom and the mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. We have domestic flowers in the flower gardens that last only one year and some flowers we have planted come back year after year. Then there are natural wildflowers that are spread by birds or the wind. I am reminded of acts of kindness that can take root and spread like wildflowers.
