Some people visit the mountain to celebrate an event in their lives or to remember someone or something that has meaning for them. The little fairy space under the big pine tree at the top of the Lupine Field has become a place where people leave reminders of something special. Now that September has arrived, it is time to turn our attention to the old apple orchard near the cabin. We are hoping there are enough good apples, not wormy, to make an apple pie. In life we sometimes hope for something to manifest and when it is time we do not take the action needed for it to become reality. When a milkweed pod has opened, the silky fibers ride the winds that blow across the valley to find fertile ground to create next year’s new growth. The leaves here show the first signs of fall foliage. Within a few weeks people will be flocking to the mountains from all over the world to experience this colorful show. The old tree is laden with small pickling pears cascading down its limbs which look like they might break at any time. Sometimes in life we are caught in a cascade of events, either negative or positive, to the point where we feel overwhelmed. Tomorrow will usher in September and the first day of metrological fall. There is fall feeling in the air, and soon the leaves will begin to turn as we have now lost two and a half hours of daylight. The green acorns growing in the oak trees are beginning to drop. On a metal roof it sounds like a gun shot. Soon the nearby ground will feel like walking on small rocks, and next spring there will be an abundance of tiny trees beginning to take root. I was given a 10-inch battery operated chain saw for my birthday and recently gave it a try when I needed to cut down a 7-inch birch at the edge of the cemetery that had been heavily damaged in a snowstorm last winter. As you might note, I have been learning a lot of life lessons watching Lori prepare to put down a layer of wood chips on the walking path through the Ormond gardens at the Center. Recently she needed to rearrange some of the plants that were encroaching on the path. I made a new discovery the other day in the Ormond Gardens that I think was planted by Lori. It has medium-sized yellow flowers and large green leaves and goes by several different names. As I walked through the gardens admiring Lori’s recent handy work, I spotted a miniature purple cone flower, only a few inches tall. It probably is near where the mother plant dropped its seeds last year. I thought of the positive miniature acts of kindness people do every day that often go unnoticed. The woodchips are being spread out over the landscape fabric to help control unwanted growth in the Center’s gardens. It also helps create a clear path for someone to wander amongst the flowers. I wonder how to control unwanted thoughts. There is an old saying, “The more you learn, the less you know.” I do not consider myself an expert on anything. Until I learned how I absorbed information, I spent my life trying to fool people into thinking I knew, but I knew I didn’t. In nature I just learned about wild carrots. With a little over a week until meteorological fall, I have noticed little changes taking place in the weather. The nights are a little cooler, the days are less hot, and the daylight ends earlier. A large male wild turkey wandered out of the woods and onto the lawn in the middle of the day, probably looking for some food in the recently cut grass. I think of our thoughts that can show up any time of day or night. I wonder where thoughts come from. A bright little spec of shining object caught my eye, and upon investigating, I discovered a piece of mica reflecting the sun. I thought about eye catching moments in life that can often be missed when one passes by thinking of the past or future. Most of my life I have been setting aside parts and pieces to use in other projects. Some get used, and some don’t. Recently we hauled a couple small truckloads of sand and small rock left over at the house to repair the road to the orchard. We now have a very large pile of wood chips at the Center that we plan to use in covering landscape fabric to keep the weeds down through the Ormond Gardens as well in other places on the property. It will take a process to get them all distributed. Several giant mulleins grow on the edge of the Lupine Field. Their stalks, flowers gone, are filled with seeds and standing tall above the other plants. They are considered very medicinal by those who know how to use them. I do not, so I just appreciate them and, for me, Nature itself has a healing energy. www.michaelhathaway.com   Support the show

When I see orbs in photos, I often wonder if there is a mystical explanation for them. Some people believe it is energy from the place where it was taken; a spirit manifesting; or just dust on the camera lens. We went up the mountain to get a better view of the 20% eclipse of the early afternoon, which we watched through our special glasses. The light didn’t actually change much; just a little darkness on a clear afternoon.
