Jesus uses a story of a wedding feast to illustrate our invitation into the Kingdom and the gift of righteousness He offers. There are those too busy to accept the invitation, and those who care not for the ones delivering the invitations. There are also some who will accept the invitation but refuse to put on the wedding garment offered by the Host. When we accept the invitation to salvation that...

From creation God has invited humanity to partner with him, ruling and reigning in the Kingdom. We are called to be about the Father’s business, tending well to the vineyard and producing the proper fruit. When we don’t steward this well He promises that it will be taken from us. Caring well for the vineyard looks like receiving Jesus and partnering in the Kingdom work… a Jesus-shaped church on mi...

Jesus contrasts two sons- one whose empty words mirror a hollow religion and one who ultimately shows true obedience. God values repentance and obedience not appearances and titles. The Kingdom of God is open to those who humbly turn and follow, regardless of past rebellion. We are called to repent and believe, walking the way of righteousness… a Jesus-shaped church on mission. We have received God’s abundant, extravagant, grace- a gift freely offered. It’s that truth that compels us to extend grace to those around us, rejoicing and welcoming in those who also say yes to God’s gift. We stand, covered by the Father’s grace, calling others around us to receive the same… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

God’s grace and mercy has covered us, freely given by a good God. It’s that truth, not just simple obedience, that compels us to forgive others and gives us the capacity to offer mercy to those around us. Harboring unforgiveness disconnects us from God’s mercy. We stand forgiven and, out of that, extend forgiveness… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

Jesus promises that his presence will be among us when we gather together with other believers. Accountability that leads to reconciliation is part of what it looks like to be a family on mission. Jesus outlines this process for us, His church. We are called to walk with one another, with His authority, towards reconciliation… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

When we make the temporary primary we miss the invitation to the eternal, the Kingdom of God. This is an upside down Kingdom, one where salvation comes in giving up our lives for Christ. We are called to see the world not merely from a human point of view, but from God’s… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

Jesus speaks a new identity over Peter, giving him power and authority- keys to the Kingdom. These gifts are for us, His church, too, but first, like Peter, we must confess Jesus as Lord. We recognize him as Christ, walk in power and authority, and believe his promise that the powers of hell will not conquer… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

Jesus’ interaction with a Gentile woman stands in contrast to the arrogance of the Pharisees earlier in the chapter. This Canaanite woman, desperate in her plight, displays a heart posture of worship, belief, and humility as opposed to their religious superiority. We can approach Jesus with this same humility, persistence, and faithfulness… A Jesus-shaped church on mission.

Chaos, both internally and externally, can be deafening. God invites us to trust his voice, believing him to be near and mighty to save. We can step faithfully out of the boat, responding to His voice as He calls us close… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

With a scarcity mindset there can be a temptation to send hurting people away, but Jesus calls us to welcome in those who are hungry for spiritual and physical nourishment. Do we trust God to provide in abundance? We are to offer compassion to the crowd, sharing the abundance of the Lord to those around us as God blesses… a Jesus-shaped church on mission. Jesus offers a string of parables calling out aspects of the Kingdom and then tells his followers that, as disciples, they should do the same. We are to be recognizing and drawing attention to the Kingdom of God both that has been and as we see it breaking into our world… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

Some will hear the message of the Kingdom and not have understanding to receive it. Others will receive it with joy but quickly lose it because of the troubles in the world and a lack of rootedness. Still others will receive the word and be good soil for growth and bearing fruit. We are to be a fertile soil, hearing the word and yielding a crop… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.

There is a war within us and around us because we are a fickle people. The inconsistency of our flesh creates a heavy burden but Jesus invites us to come and find rest in Him. We can partner in the Kingdom work, a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light… a Jesus-shaped church on mission.
