The Clockwork Octopus / Yr Wythdroed Clocwaith 01.06.2017

This a tune I wrote with in June 2017. It was inspired by the clockwork octopus that appears in Natasha Pulley's novel "The Watchmaker of Filigree Street". I thought clockwork octopus was a good name for a tune, and this is what I came up with The recording features the cavaquinho, low and high whistles, guitar and bodhrán. At folk sessions in Bangor we play this tune in a set with The Bells of Hi...

The Whistling Windows / Y Ffenstri Sïo 23.03.2017

This is a little tune that developed from noodling around in minor keys. The name was inspired by a visit to the Yacht Club in Caernarfon on a stormy night in March 2017 when the windows were actually whistling. Unfortunately I didn't record that sound, so I used my pūrerehua (a kind of Māori bullroarer) to make the sound of the wind at the end of the track. The other instruments on this track are...

Hajej, můj zlatouškou 13.01.2016

This a lullaby from Moravia in the Czech Republic. The words are: Hajej, můj zlatoušku hajej a spi, zamhouři maličky očičky svý; hajej, dadej, nynej, malej! zamhouři maličký očičky svý. Hajej, můj andílku, hajej a spi, matička kolíbá děťátko svý; hajej, dadej, nynej, malej! matička kolíbá děťátko svý Here's a translation: Sleep, my little golden one, sleep. Close your little eyes and sleep. Sleep,...

A Hen in My Hat / Iâr yn fy Het 06.05.2015

This is a song I wrote in September / October 2014 for no particular reason. At first I just wanted to incorporate the phrase 'My hovercraft is full of eels' into a song, then I decided to write each verse in a different language: English, French, Welsh, Mandarin Chinese and Irish. This recording was made in November 2018 with harmonies, tenor and baritone ukuleles and shaky egg. A Hen in My Hat T...

Make The Most Of It While It Lasts 10.12.2012

A little ditty that came to me in December 2012 while standing at my kitchen sink, doing the dishes and looking out the window at the rain. The photo is one I took of Bangor High Street on a rainy Wednesday in November 2017. Here are the lyrics: When the rain falls from the sky Don’t you fret, don’t you cry Just put on your boots and go outside. Jump in puddles and go wild. And release your inner...
