Monroe Edwards was one of the most notorious figures in early Texas history. He was an illegal slave trader, con artist, and the central figure in a sensational 1842 trial that captured national attention. Edwards smuggled hundreds of captive Africans into Brazoria County during the 1830s and sold them off to other plantation owners in the area. Edwards crimes would eventually lead to his downfall.
