Young History

The smallest independent country on mainland Africa, literal just a river and home to many different people groups are all ways to describe this small but great nation. This is The Gambia 

Very likely the most commonly forgotten and overlooked country in Europe has a history very much worth knowing. From slavic groups to medieval kings and Romanians to Communists, this country has all of it and more. This is Moldova.

The Skeleton Coast, The Namibia Desert, and The Land God Made in Anger, are all titles given to this ;and. Despite the dreary names this country has a lot more to tell about its people than the geography of the land. This is Namibia.

In Southern Africa lies a country that has battled against all odds to get to its current level of achievement which is far higher than almost everywhere in the region. One of the world's most influential leaders that has been vastly unsung called this nation home. This is Botswana. 

The largest sovereign enclave country in the world has a lot more history within its small borders than you may think. A personal favorite of mine, the history of this country is very unique to its neighbors. oh yeah, the country also won a war against prime Great Britain. This is Lesotho.

A plentiful history lies within the borders of this gorgeous African nation. Many nations have tried to lay their claim to this land but only the people of the country can call it theirs to this day. This one may have slipped under your radar but that will make this even more interesting. This is Gabon.

This deeply forested baltic country has a history that has seen Vikings, early Germanic tribes, Communism and the World Wars. There is little that this country isn't ready for because it has seen it all. This is Latvia.

The home of Alexander the Great... or not, it depends who you ask. However, this country does have a storied history that connects to Ancient Greece, the balkans, communism and now the European Union. This is North Macedonia.

Almost like a sequel to the last episode is this one about Equatorial Guinea's neighbor. This country has seen many people groups come in and out of the lands but they all left an impact. The history of this country covers many eras and many moments of struggle. This is Guinea-Bissau. 

A small but strong nation of Africa faces west outwards towards the Atlantic, in this nation there has been war, colonialism and struggle but its people have never faltered. This country's story is full of growth and change and I think it is one you will enjoy. This is Equatorial Guinea. 

The Big Apple, The city that never sleeps, The concrete jungle and many other nicknames define this city. 5 different boroughs make up this one of a kind city. There is beyond too much to say about this city here so please listen in. This is the most famous city in the world, This is New York City.

An island nation in the Persian Gulf has a history that stretches back to 4,000 BC, and it seems there wasn't a dull moment from then to now. An endless list of empires have left their influence on this land as well as an enormous amount of people. Truly one of the most unique stories we have covered so far. This is Bahrain.  

The most southern country in all of the Caribbean, the richest country in the Caribbean and another dual island country in the Caribbean are all ways to describe this country. This is a country with many layers of history and that's all I'm going to give you for now. This is Trinidad and Tobago. 

The Baltic cousin to the Nordic countries, the IT capital of the EU and the home of over 9,000 years of history are all ways to describe this small European nation. This is Estonia. 

This small country occupies only half of one of the many islands that make up Indonesia. This country has seen many occupiers, many influences and a lot of change. This is Timor-Leste

The most densely populated country in Africa, one of the only very high ranking African countries on the HDI list, and the only majority Hindu African country. These are all ways to describe this unique African Island Nation. This is Mauritius. 

A country within a country within a continent is a way to describe the small country formerly known as Swaziland. This country has had a long history with many people groups coming into it and influencing it. However, it has always seemed to get the short end of the stick since colonial times. Nonetheless, this country holds the story of the Swazi people. This is Eswatini. 

Lying directly on the Red Sea is a country only the size of New Jersey. Within these small borders there have been many historical events, wars and changes that affect that have an affect far outside of them. The most urbanized country in Africa, the home to the Afar and Issa people and the lowest lying part of Mainland Africa. This is Djibouti.  

An Oceanic paradise holds a lot more in its waters than just a beautiful island get away. Volcanic islets, war chiefs, root based psychedelics, and race riots, all that and more in this country's history. This is Fiji.

The third biggest island in the mediterranean has a history that expands far pasts its borders. There are an endless amount of cultures that have influenced this country. With a history that goes back as far as the 10th Millennium BCE. Truly one of my favorite country history's in the world, This is Cyprus. 

A group of small islands lies in the waters between Madagascar and mainland Africa and within these islands is a history that few know. From Malay natives, and Muslim influence, to French occupation, and a chaotic post independence political scene: This is Comoros.

The only country in the world absorbing more carbon than it is emitting, a buddhist majority country, and a former isolationist government are all ways to describe this very unique asian country. This is Bhutan. 

Another episode on the three Guianas, will take us through a country that has a very special ethnic mix. India and Africa have their diasporas on  full display here making up around 50% of the population each. This one was hardly known to me at all before doing the research for this episode so this will be a learning experience for both of us. This is Guyana. 

A mix of vastly different cultures across a handful of vastly different islands make up this country.  There is an endless amount of things to say of the people in this country so I will say what I can in this episode. The name of this country itself comes from the treasures it holds within. This is The Solomon Islands.
