A woman drives home from her mother’s house along a familiar road in post-apocalyptic Wales. On a quiet stretch at the top of a hill, something happens that she will never quite find the words for. What follows is a story about the distance between who we are to other people and who we are alone in the dark.

Tomos ap Llewelyn is a 39 year old man living with his parents in Aberaeron who has devoted his life — in spirit, if not always in body — to Welsh independence. When independence arrives overnight and for entirely the wrong reasons, Tomos finds himself with a cause but no enemy, a movement but no momentum, and two small children who need their tea. Undeterred, he sets his sights on a new injustice...

In the shadow of Wales' only nuclear power station, two neighbouring farmers are locked in a feud nobody fully understands. When the apocalypse accidentally reignites their rivalry, what begins as a war of signs escalates into something neither of them — nor their wives, watching from separate kitchen windows — could have predicted.
