The world is a place of cause and effect. When we notice our life not aligning with our purpose, we must search for the cause. Often, we neglect looking at spiritual causes for our dissatisfaction with life. This is what we will discuss in the next section.

There are people who wish they had more hours of the day to make more money. Imam al-Ghazali is encouraging us to maximize our spiritual gain through sacrificing for Allah’s sake

After seeking knowledge, it is necessary to implement that knowledge. Thus, Imam al-Ghazali draws our attention to the need to live spiritual lives, permeated with a focus on earning God’s pleasure.

The prophet Yusuf’s life is a primer in patience in the face of tragedy. As a child, Yusuf was thrown in the well, then Allah saved him and placed him in luxury and peace. Now, Allah is testing him again with an even more severe test: prison. It shows that tests are not a one-off experience; instead, the life of this world is a series of tests and trials.

In the next passage of Surah Yusuf, we are reminded of the harms of gossip and spreading rumors. Additionally, we see that In resisting temptation, we often must make tremendous sacrifices to protect our relationship with Allah.

In the next section of Surah Yusuf, we read the account of a young Prophet Yusuf facing immense temptation, yet remaining firm through his focus on Allah’s beneficence.

In life, we all seek fulfillment. Yet, the ways in which we seek it often differ drastically. Imam al-Ghazali reminds us that true fulfillment lies in aspiring to be a person who prioritizes their soul.

What happened to Yusuf and the sequence in which it occurred was not by chance, but rather Allah had predestined it. It was a Divine Plan. A human being is driven in all that they do by their why–their raison d’etre. Yet, we seldom spend time reflecting on why it is that we do what we do, or are who we are. Doing so can yield tremendous results and meaningful transformation.

With Yusuf at the bottom of the well and his father, Ya’qub, grieving at home, one wonders how to face such a situation. The Prophet Ya’qub gives us the answer in his well-known statement: “So ˹I can only endure with˺ beautiful patience!” (12:18).

The starting point for all personal growth and change is self-awareness. In the next section, Imam al-Ghazali draws attention to its importance, while highlighting that our primary focus must be spiritual aspiration.

It is commonly observed that those with illustrious endings usually had humble (and often difficult) beginnings. The life of the Prophet Yusuf is no different. After being informed by his father that he will ultimately be blessed and honoured by Allah, Yusuf finds himself at the bottom of a well.

After emphasizing the importance of performing acts pleasing to Allah, Imam al-Ghazali reminds us that entry into paradise will be through God’s mercy. This reminder serves to keep us humble and unassuming.

One story can have many different angles and perspectives. Surah Yusuf presents the same circumstance, just from different viewpoints. How might we learn to navigate situations to ensure that we are not adopting harmful and inaccurate perspectives?

Imam al-Ghazali reminds us to make seeking knowledge a priority throughout our lives; but knowledge alone isn’t sufficient. One must transform as a result of attaining that knowledge, otherwise it will be a witness against them on the Final Day.

The relationship between a father and son is special in so many ways. The son seeks to learn from and acquire the approval of his father; meanwhile, the father is tasked with encouraging his son, while guiding him towards what is good and away from what is harmful. Surah Yusuf offers us much guidance related to the father-son dynamic.

From among the first advices Imam al-Ghazali offers his student (and us) is to be really careful not to waste time. The Prophet described time as an asset that many fail to value properly. They let time slip by, unmarked and unexamined.

As humans, we have a natural desire to listen to stories; they capture our imagination, impart deep life lessons, and captivate us throughout. Allah describes Surah Yusuf as the most beautiful of stories. The surah is full of meaningful messages of patience, reliance on Allah, and how to overcome hardship and betrayal. The fifth quality that Imam al-Ghazali mentions one should seek in a friend is honesty. Without honesty, a friendship is susceptible to deception and fracture.

We seldom think that pain can be a cause for celebration and joy. Yet, for the believer who has their gaze set upon the Afterlife, the reward earned through patience and bearing of difficulties makes it worth it.

One of the most important qualities to look for in a friend is uprightness: the discipline to avoid persisting in major sins. An upright friend will ensure that they don’t neglect your rights, just as they don’t neglect the rights of God.

The classroom of character development in this world is the difficulties that we go through. Each challenge offers us an opportunity to develop a part of us. The eighth wisdom of pain in life is to develop the spiritual capacity for patience.

This week, we continue our study of the qualities Imam al-Ghazali has outlined to look for in a friend, and to embody as a friend to others.
