When life gets in the way. How can we find hope again?
My name is Catharina Karlsson. It started with a broken heart when my mother died and I was helped by grief recovery. I then decided that I wanted to give back and became a grief coach myself. I want to be a voice for the change of life that happens when life gets in the way for different reasons. I want to talk about how to find courage and tools to handle loss and refind hope in life. We are all individuals and there is no right or wrong and I want to approach grief from a humble perspective although based on my own perspectives and experiences. I am a teacher, special educator, mother and d...

Grief Recovery, why? Unprocessed grief is almost always due to something emotional that has not been communicated. Therefore, communication is also key. There is otherwise a risk of getting caught up in rumi...

Summer series 2: Time and change. 30.07.2025 28:31
Summer series; episode 2 Time and change. When life gets in the way, we often need to reprioritize time and think about what needs to . Maybe time just goes by without us feeling better. When we talk about grief linked to time, we may think that we will get over the loss during or after a certain time, but it doesn't work that way. Every grief and loss are individual, thus the need for time...
Summer series: 1. Back ground and cancer. 23.07.2025 18:11
Grief recovery helped me to heal and I decided to become a certified grief coach myself, since I also wanted to help others, which I do now; individually, in groups and proactively with seminars and through this podcast. So, my own experience led to a strong urge to share the tools. I also believe a lot in proactivity about how we as fellow human beings can support and be there for each other when...
Losing yourself 01.07.2025 26:47
Losing yourself I got lost between a goodbye and a why.. My colors disappeared. I got lost and in the silence, I became someone I didn't recognize. I didn't have the energy to look for myself right there and then, but in memories, in meetings with others, in notebooks, I found who I used to be again, and understood that sometimes you get lost, that it's natural. (Lanler 2024) The value lies in con...
The loss of right to your own experience 25.05.2025 34:09
" In the silence, it feels like you don't care. I want to share my story, my truth, dare to be vulnerable. I dare to make my cracks, my dreams and my thoughts visible. In the silence, I feel that you think my story and my thoughts are wrong, exaggerated or silly. I am met by a silence that hurts more than words. Your eyes look at your phone when I talk and I realize that you may hear but not...
Someone else has it worse 30.03.2025 29:18
“There is always someone who has it worse, so what I am experiencing is probably not so bad. Maybe it would just be perceived as petty whining or grumbles if I would mention it or talk about it”. (Lanler, 2024) This might be an example of how we think, diminishing our own experiences or not taking them seriously ourselves. Still our body and brain scream of pain or of need for support, help or jus...
The place we didn´t chose. 23.02.2025 31:26
At certain times I find myself thinking more intensively about how I held my mother´s hand before she passed away. Her hand was warm. The warmth affected me. The warmth was there even though she slipped away further and further from me. I can still recall it, as if it was yesterday. But she disappeared from me and the next day the hand was cold. I clung to the feeling of warmth in order not...
Anxiety about Holidays 06.01.2025 9:48
I wish you welcome to this episode where I talk about feelings about the Holidays. We might feel as if we're within a labyrinth of emotions, trying to navigate, but without a map or a compass. It is ok to feel lost. Maybe you have memories coming back around Christmas, The New Year or other Holidays or maybe you are feeling lonely, without a person to share it with. Loneliness can become mor...
To grieve one´s self esteem 20.12.2024 21:37
Welcome to listen to this episode about loss of self esteem! Self esteem and self confidence are basic needs in our identity and perceåtions of ourselves. If we lose them, we can feel a deep grief, a loss of an important part of ourselves. When someone is undermining my words, they pull away the floor I am standing on. My feet start standing unsteadily and for each time it happens, it becomes more...
Grief recovery second episode 26.11.2024 29:05
Grief recovery We don’t say good-bye to dear memories. We don’t say good-bye to love. We allow ourselves to be free and move on with the feeling that we have completed the grief process and the communication. Unprocessed grief is almost always about something uncommunicated of emotional nature. Thus, communication is also the key. We need to overview unspoken thoughts, words and feelin...
To be the one who is there 14.11.2024 21:24
It is about love, priorities, time and care. Hold hands, listen, ease someone’s burden. All the difficult feelings of a person taking care of another one, during a very painful period of time don't show on the outside. A person who cares also needs to be heard and cared for. This period of time is enormously challenging. It can be long or short. I want to share the last months with my mother...
When no one asks how you feel anymore, 24.10.2024 18:04
When no one asks how you feel anymore but you feel like grief just hit you yesterday and your world is broken into pieces. When we meet a grieving person, our own feelings from losses can come to the surface again, which we might believe that we cannot handle. It might lead to us not asking, holding back and there can be a silence around grief and painful life changes. We hold back what we want to...
It's ok to be sad. 16.10.2024 15:08
Sometimes we pretend to feel differently in order not to reveal ourselves and not appear vulnerable or weak because we do not want to be that. Sometimes we want to protect others so they won’t have to consider how to support us or what to say to comfort us. Maybe we don't want others to worry about us or make them feel uncomfortable in the situation. Sometimes we are just afraid to open up and be...
Experiencing the weakening of someone you love 12.09.2024 30:17
Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying -I will try again tomorrow. (M-A Radmacher) I was thrown to the floor several times by the fact that the person I loved most in the world got cancer. First time when I was a teenager and then again and again. Not having a dad around to contact or talk to, nor having any siblings, made it feel like my sit...
Grief and Communication 22.08.2024 20:55
Sometimes I hear that the worst thing is silence. A silence that seems to signal that what has happened is not important, even though it is. We want to support, but how can we say and how do we ask? It is difficult to know how to behave and to approach the situation both for the affected person and people in the environment. It might even happen that no one says anything to the affected person. Th...
Grief recovery 10.08.2024 21:24
Early in life we learn that getting things creates happiness and a good life. We learn how to get and achieve things, but we don’t know what to do when we lose them. It is important to be able to heal our hearts when they are broken. It is not about broken brains and that means that only theoretical comments are not helpful. I give you a few examples of those: Don’t be sad, you can have more...
Moving houses, confronting memories 18.07.2024 31:32
In this episode I will talk about what I have been going through lately or am going through currently. Confronting all the memories. Suddenly old chapters in life come back. Things like a letter, a diary, a photo or a garment have made me reminisce of old times. Strong symbols for past times which have really shaken me. I have cried, smiled to myself, investigated my feelings as well as laughed at...
Grief and spring 31.05.2024 10:59
Today I want to share a short extra episode about spring or summer and grief These times of year can be a bit extra hard after a loss. Feelings of loneliness or feeling left out can become more obvious and painful. We might see couples walking hand in hand and their happy eyes and laughter can make us feel excluded from life according to the expected norms for the season. Spring and summer might o...
Grief and achievement 14.05.2024 20:39
“How tired I am, no more energy, my body is heavy, my brain will not focus or cannot think. I want to but cannot remember things right now. I am grieving.” (Unknown author) After a loss we often think that we ought to get back to work, school and other places as soon as possible. Agreements vary from workplace to workplace regarding how long you are allowed to stay home. Often we...
