Episodes

162 - Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023) - A Shudder Original 31.10.2023

What could lead both Michelle and JD to totally unexpected opinions of this fourth entry in the popular found footage mockumentary franchise? Let's all find out together!

161 - Finley (2020) 30.10.2023

We're wrapping up Spooktober Shorts with one more special request, a fantastically fun horror comedy that dares to ask, "couldn't you just kick a creepy doll across the room?" Watch the short HERE !

160 - Music Video Horror Triple Feature 29.10.2023

Today JD and Michelle are diving into not one, not two, but THREE music video short films! These are all pretty intense, so watch them with fair warning! Frozen Soul - "Morbid Effigy" Cattle Deapitation - Forced Gender Reassignment DyE - Fantasy

159 - When Evil Lurks (2023) - A Shudder Original 28.10.2023

What could possibly be so good about one movie that it made JD reconsider his rating of an entirely different movie, leading Michelle to an existential crisis? Let's all find out together! DISCLAIMER: This movie and episode contain graphic imagery and discussion of extreme violence on animals.

158 - Too Many Cooks (2014) 27.10.2023

This is the one for our Adult Swim shorts mini-series. If you know, you know. If you don't, you don't, but you can at the link below. I don't even know what else to say about it, except that Michelle tells a real deep story of trauma bordering on offputting overshare - just kidding, it's a meaningful story, and a great episode. Watch the short HERE

157 - Unedited Footage of a Bear (2014) 26.10.2023

Imagine it's infomercial time, four o'clock in the morning, and you have this wild horror satire of modern pharmaceutical marketing and the extensive side effects associated with many new drugs dropped on you out of nowhere with no warning. What an experience that must have been back in 2014! Watch the short HERE

156 - Opal (2020) 25.10.2023

Jack Stauber's most recent short creation, 2020's Opal, is a wild mishmash of visual elements, a sort of motion picture collage incorporating a variety of techniques, with claymation at its center. It also happens to be one of the more bleak, depressing shorts we're discussing this month, which is really saying something! Watch the short HERE

155 - The Chair (2023) 24.10.2023

What could possibly go wrong by snagging an old chair off somebody's trash curb? Let's cut to the chase: Michelle made JD watch this once a while back and he didn't like it. And then she made him watch it again and he did. How the heck did that happen? Give it a listen and we'll tell you all about it! Watch the short HERE

154 - Batman Dead End (2003) 23.10.2023

Oh, that Joker. Always escaping Arkham Asylum and kicking up a ruckus. But then... well, just go watch it. It's the crossover you never knew you needed. Apparently Kevin Smith once called it "possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made." Watch the short HERE .

153 - The Backrooms (Found Footage) (2022) 22.10.2023

Kane Pixels was only sixteen years old when he took the internet by storm with this short that was produced in one month using Blender and After Effects, and now he's got a deal with A24 to make his first feature film, which will be adapted from the Backrooms concept. Is the hype justified? Let's all find out together! Watch the short HERE .

152 - Night of the Hunted (2023) - A Shudder Original 21.10.2023

Just exactly how badly can an ostensibly quick stop at a gas station in the middle of both nowhere and the night go? Let's all find out together!

151- Halloween en la Vida Real (2022) 20.10.2023

We wrap up franchise fan film week with the only real iconic franchise it could be - "Halloween". This is also our only horror comedy this week, which puts a lot of pressure on it to represent for horror comedy everywhere. Did it live up to the challenge? Let's all find out together! Watch the short HERE !

150 - Chucky: Friends ’til the End (2019) 19.10.2023

If you're wondering how a shot-on-video labor-of-love Child's Play fan short got access to such an impressive and authentic looking Good Guy doll, give the episode a spin. This is the most indie film of the week (maybe the month) but it has incredible spirit. Check it out HERE !

149 - Family Recipe (2023) 18.10.2023

Part homage recreation, part original fan film, with more than enough splatter to satiate the gorehounds. Not only do we discuss the movie, but also JD goes off on a tare about how The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, one of this favorite horror films of all time, is NOT a slasher film. Watch the short HERE !

148 - No More Souls (2004) 17.10.2023

Gary J. Tunnicliffe went on to write Hellraiser: Revelations, as well as writing and directing Hellraiser: Judgement, and it all happened because of this six-minute character piece. Equal parts makeup effects demo and audition tape probably sounds less appealing than it really is, but you'll understand when you watch. Which you can do HERE !

147 - Dylan’s New Nightmare (2023) 16.10.2023

In perhaps the boldest move in all of Franchise Fan Film week, Womp Stomp Films brings us a Nightmare on Elm Street joint that sequelizes one of the most divisive films in the franchise, Wes Craven's New Nightmare! Who is Dylan and how does it all tie in? There's really only one way to know. Well, two. Listen to this episode, or... Watch the short HERE !

146 - Never Hike in the Snow (2020) 15.10.2023

We're kicking off Franchise Fan Film week of Spooktober Shorts with this Friday the 13th fan film that puts Ol' Hockey Face himself into the winter woods to do what he does best. That's killin', in case you weren't sure. Turns out this is a prequel to another film that is longer than shorts but shorter than pants called Never Hike Alone. It's a capri film. Anyway, here's the SHORT !

145 - The Puppetman (2023) - A Shudder Original 14.10.2023

What kind of film resulted in the biggest separation of scores between Michelle and JD in the history of the show? Let's all find out together!

144 - Beau (2011) / Beau is Afraid (2023) 13.10.2023

While Ari Aster's short film Beau appears almost shot for shot in the pants film "Beau is Afraid", there are also hints of Munchausen and Basically and even The Turtle's Head at play in the pants as well. About ten minutes of this episode addresses the short, and then we dive into the pants. Watch the short HERE ! Sorry, the feature is still a VOD rental.

143 - The Turtle’s Head (2014) 12.10.2023

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who hear, "Ari Aster made a short called 'The Turtle's Head'," and immediately know what this movie is about, and those who don't. The most out of character of this week's Ari Aster shorts, but the most fun as well. Check out the short HERE !

142 - Basically (2014) 11.10.2023

Not just a visual stylist, Ari Aster has a way with actors, and is skilled in finding compelling ways to capture them in their moment. I wonder if he has ever done any stage directing? I, for one, would love to see Ari Aster's "Death of a Salesman". That could be dope. Anyway, watch the short HERE !

141 - Munchausen (2013) 10.10.2023

Ari Aster week part two is "Munchausen", a unique film that gives us an early look at Aster's developing visual sensibilities, as well as his fascination with family trauma. Can you tell I wrote thirteen of these in one night? Just watch the movie, silly goose! You can do that HERE !

140 - The Strange Thing About the Johnsons (2011) 09.10.2023

HEADS UP: today's film deals with some real heavy subject matter, including sexual abuse. We wanted to make sure you know up front if that's an uncomfortable subject for you. We're going to do more of this in the future. That being said, this episode also inspired the first time in WWS history where we had a disagreement of interpretation so significant that we stopped recording mid-episode to bot...

139 - Herman’s Cure All Tonic (2008) 08.10.2023

Welcome to Spooktober Shorts week two! This week, we're taking a deep dive into the short films of horror golden boy Ari Aster, and we're starting all the way back in 2008 with "Herman's Cure All Tonic", the story of a fella named Herman... and his Cure All Tonic. Watch the short HERE !

138 - V/H/S/85 (2023) - A Shudder Original 07.10.2023

Does the sixth installment of the popular found footage anthology franchise live up to the record-setting reputation of its two predecessors in the Shudder era? Let's all find out together!
