WCCO Radio: 100 Years

Many health professionals are steaming mad about what's going on in the Trump Administration where vaccines are concerned as new guidelines are confusing, at best, and leave people wondering what to do. There's so much turmoil and conflicting information that CVS is requiring prescriptions for some vaccines in some states.

Labor Day is over, which means it's officially back to school for all of America. Here, we dive into the latest in topics, including tech that can save lives ... and shorten lifespans. Plus, how much help with homework is okay and how to teach your kids about AI.

The morning of May 27th, 2020, 36 hours after the killing of George Floyd in South Minneapolis, widespread protests, unrest and even riots broke out. It was one of the most shocking and unforgettable moments in WCCO's 100 years. (Getty Images / Stephen Maturen / Stringer)

Early in WCCO's history, the station became one of the first to air "network programming" when NBC began in 1926. For the first time, coast-to-coast live broadcasts became a reality and WCCO was part of those legendary early shows, another of our 100 moments in 100 years!

Bloomington native Tom Burnett is considered one of the heroes of flight 93 on 9/11, when passengers helped take down a hijacked plane heading for Washington. WCCO covered his memorial, another memorable moment in our 100 years.

In 2000, Minnesota sports fans were shocked to hear about an accident involving Timberwolves player Malik Sealy. He was killed in the crash. It's another memorable moment in WCCO's 100 years. (Image: Todd Warshaw /Allsport)

In one of the most unexpected World Series matchups ever, the Twins and Atlanta Braves battled it out in 1991, one year after each finished in last place, a first in MLB history. March 11th, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Two weeks later, on March 25th, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced a stay-at-home executive order, kicking off one of the more incredible moments in the 100 years, another of our memorable moments looking back on a century on the air.

We know Minnesota has cold winters. But in February in 1996, little Tower, MN broke the state low temperature record when it hit 60 below zero. WCCO's Mike Lynch was there.

He was the ultimate "Good Neighbor" and for over three decades a staple on WCCO Radio. It was also an emotional time when Dave Lee announced he was hanging up the headphones. Another of our 100 Moments in 100 Years.

In 1991, golfer Payne Stewart won the U.S. Open at Chaska's Hazeltine. But eight years later, tragedy struck when a plane carrying Stewart and others crashed in a field near Aberdeen, South Dakota killing everyone on board. In 1993 the North Stars left for Dallas. Truly one of the saddest and hardest moments as we look back on 100 years of WCCO Radio. In 1981, an era of Minnesota sports came to a close when the Vikings wrapped up their season at Met Stadium. WCCO brought you the final game at "The Met" after 25 years as the home of the Vikings and Twins before moving to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
