Voices of the West

Wild West Shows is the topic of this week's show. Buffalo Bill Cody had to most successful show, but, he wasn't the only one to have a show. Lots of the B movie cowboy stars and extras got their start in a Wild West Show.

Author Bob Rosebrough joins us for the hour. His book is A Place of Thin Veil: Life and Death in Gallup, New Mexico . The book is available at Amazon.com . The book chronicles some of the mysterious goings on in Gallup with the whites and Navajos.

Western Writers of America author Sherry Monahan joins us to talk about her latest book, The Tombstone Cookbook , available at Amazon.com .

For our first show of April, we delve into what we call "Nuggets." We touch on a number of topics including the most recent Academy Awards program and whatever happened to the character actors that we remember in the movies.

For our Movie Saturday show, we look at and talk about the western movies of Gene Hackman. He didn't make a ton of them, but those he made were quite memorable and good!

March 19th is the birthdate of American western artist Charlie Russell. Film maker and author Dan Gagliasso joins us to talk about the life and career of Russell and why Russell is an important icon of the American Old West.

Musician Phil Oelezen joins us for the hour. By day, he's a financial planner. By night, he turns cowboy and brings happiness to those who hear his music.

Author Lynn Downey joins us for the hour. She's the author of American Dude Ranch , a book about--you guessed it--dude ranches! She shares some great stories about early dude ranches and explains the ranches popularity.

For our Movie Saturday program, we look at and talk about the first talkies of our favorite western stars. We'll talk about the movies of Buck Jones, Bob Steele, Tom Mix, Harry Carey and Tim McCoy. 

Former Western Writers of America President Chris Enss joins us. We talked about women in western movies and television.

Larry Callies joins us for the hour. He's the founder and director of the Black Cowboy Museum in Rosenberg, TX. Larry is a cowboy and we explore the history of Black cowboys like Bass Reeves and Nat Love.

Western Writers of America author Bill Markley joins us the talk about his book, Geronimo & Sitting Bull, Leaders of the Legendary West . This book goes beyond what you learned in school or from the movies. Available at Amazon.com.

 For our Movie Saturday program, we featured the movies of John Ford. Film historian Michael F. Blake joined us. We talked about the silent movies and talkies of Ford. We also talked about the Ford Stable of Actors.

Actor and filmmaker John Marrs joins us in the studio. He's part of the team that put together 12 Westerns in 12 Months.

Our interview for this show is with Luther Nallie. He was the Trail Boss for the Sons of the Pioneers for more than 40 years. This interview comes by way of our friend, Susan McCray, and her nationally-syndicated radio show, Getting To Know You . She talked with Luther prior to his passing in early 2021.
