Voices of the West

Why do cows need cowboys? We answer that question with Western Writers of America authors Nancy Plain and Rocky Gibbons. They're the editors of a new anthology written for the young adult demographic. The book, "Why Cows Need Cowboys", is available May 1st at a number of bookstores and Amazon.com.

Our Movie Saturday show comes from the White Stallion Ranch. We remember the life and career of actor Henry Darrow, who played Monolito Montoya on the High Chaparral TV series. Joining us is HC Casting Director Susan McCray and actor Don Collier, who played Sam Butler on the show.

It's our end-of-the-month show we call Movie Saturday. We streamed live from the White Stallion Ranch and our topic was screenplays and screenwriters--what makes a great story? Our guest is True West Magazine editor Stuart Rosebrook. His dad, Jeb Rosebrook, wrote the screenplay to Junior Bonner as well as a number of other films.

Movie locations is the topic of this show. Our guest is Film Historian and former Old Tucson tour guide Marty Freese. 

Steve Boice from the Horsen' Around Rescue joins us to talk about another way to treat horses by employing osteopathy--which involves evaluating the motion in the spine and lower limbs in three dimensions. Steve has been taking classes at clinic to learn more about this method and talks about how it will help with caring for the rescue animals.

Historian Zonnie Gorman joins us to talk about the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II. Her father, Dr. Carl Gorman, was recruited by the Marine Corps to be a Code Talker. Ms. Gorman talks about how the Code Talkers came to be and their contributions to the war effort.

Our guest is John Rhodes. His father and grandfather were inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and Rodeo Historical Society. Rhodes' grandfather, John, was also instrumental in starting the Tucson Rodeo in 1925.

On this edition, we talk with Western Writers of America author Johnny D. Boggs. He is the winner of 8 Spur Awards for his writing. He is also a recent inductee to the Western Writers Hall of Fame. And, he's the recipient of the Owen Wister Award.

We celebrate the life of western author Max Evans who passed away in August 2020. Joining us is New Mexico author Robert Nott, who co-authored a book with Evans about director Sam Peckinpah.

Our show today celebrates Don Collier's 92nd birthday. He joins us by phone along with Susan McCray, the casting director for the High Chaparral show. Susan's late husband, Kent, was the production manager for the show.
