S o Tom S o Tom and Pr ncipe Een van de eerste piraten die een houten been had, en waarvan we het weten, was Cornelis Jol. Op papier was Jol een admiraal in de West-Indische Compagnie, en dit geeft gelijk aan hoe de WIC niet alleen handel dreef, maar ook piraterij. Technically, Jol was an admiral in the Dutch West India Company, which highlights the dualist nature of particularly the earlier Dutch colonial adventure, as Jol’s specialty was raiding Spanish and Portuguese fleets, gathering large amounts of loot in the process.
