There was something about Portland that gave me courage. I don't know if it was the weather, or the fact that I had a job where I was respected, or if it was all that incredible beer (and let me tell you, the beer was OUTSTANDING) or if it was the rain, but it was something. What does goes into the lunchbox when you're working as a landscaper with your father? 

What was the first thing you learned to make when you left home? Do you remember? Did you have some kind of crazy college dorm room food hack? I did and IT WAS DELICIOUS!  PS. You can actually hear Peat yowling on this one. I just did not have it in me to re-record. So you get two sad cat meows as a gift with purchase. 

In that weird in-between time of high school and college summer jobs, in the days before internships and real jobs, I worked at the most magical summer resort. If you remember the movie Dirty Dancing--you know this resort.  

My father's signature meal. After he got sober and changed jobs, my mother started working two nights a week at a halfway house. Dad and I took turns making dinner but neither of us were particularly skilled in the kitchen, but we liked what we ate. 

The Bullocks were one of many families that became my family, but the first family where I was well and truly wanted. 

When your childhood friends go on without you. 

Sometimes, it isn't the holiday, but all the rituals AROUND the holiday that is the special part. Oh, and the leftovers.

There's something about other people's kitchens that I will always love--probably because they have always been safe harbor for me (for the most part) and the very first (and for the next several decades) "family" kitchen for me was the Roch's kitchen where I learned how to make Macaroni and Cheese.
