Taking a break from our series in Acts, we took a look at prayer, specifically praying through the Psalms with the Lord's prayer as a framework. We prayed through Psalm 4, which leads us to trust God in the midst of distress.

Stephen becomes the prosecutor at his own trial. King Jesus stands to render the verdict. Even while Stephen is being stoned, it is his executioners who stand condemned. Stephen died defending the biblical understanding of law and temple. If he would die over these things, we ask, what is our theology of law and temple or prophet and place?

Are we Christians just misguided fanatics or are we on God's side? That's the question at hand in this text. God is on the side of Stephen and on the side of his church. He always will be.

The devil is crafty. He tries full-on open assault in the form of persecution. He engages in crafty sabotage. And in this text we see him employing the one tactic that seems to be most deadly against 21st century Americans, distraction. How does King Jesus bring his church through the other side of this attack?

Jesus will triumph over his enemies. In this passage, his kingdom is victorious in the face of opposition, though not in the way we might expect.

The story of Ananias and Sapphira may be a confusing story. What is the point of God striking these two hypocrites down so dramatically and harshly, and why does he not do the exact same to us? As we dig into the story in context, we see the purpose of the story. Christ's kingdom will prevail against external and internal opposition.
