As we continue this sermon series on the Gospel of Matthew, we look at the early years of Jesus’ life in which he spent time in Egypt before settling in an Israelite city called Nazareth. What do these locations teach us?

At the beginning of chapter 2, Matthew introduces a big theme of his Gospel as he presents Jesus Christ as a King. In this sermon we look at how Christ is a King of supreme authority, with an extensive reign, who blesses and protects his people.

At the beginning of Matthew’s Gospel, we’re introduced to Jesus Christ through a genealogy which Matthew traces for us. Ancient genealogies established a person’s credentials and suitability for a particular role, and in this genealogy we see that Jesus is the new Israel, the embodiment of God’s grace, and the Restorer of God’s kingdom.

At the end of 1 Samuel, David - God’s chosen king - comprehensively delivers his people, in an event that introduces us to the greater deliverance that would be accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ. In this sermon we look at the deliverance we need, how we get it, and what it means for us.

One of the themes we pick up on in the first “Christmas” is the theme of frailty. In this Christmas address we look at how Christ’s birth teaches us about frailty then, our frailty now, and the end of frailty to come.

In the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, Saul’s life ends in tragedy. Chapter 28 encourages us to reflect on the reason Saul’s demise: he stopped listening to God’s word. In this sermon we consider how God graciously speaks to us, the importance of listening to Him, and what to do when God seems silent.

In 1 Samuel, from chapter 19 to the end of the book we read of David being hunted by Saul. David is restrained in his response to Saul, refusing to take his life when he had opportunity. In chapter 25, we see the reason for David’s restraint and how it is we can be restrained in our lives.
