Proverbs 2 gives us the true answer to how to get wisdom: we must pray, and we must work. More than that, Proverbs 2 is one of the most helpful chapters in the Bible because it tells us how to grow; how to grow in sanctification; how to grow in our relationship with Jesus; and how wisdom can serve as a safeguard (defense) against the temptations of life.

Proverbs are shrunken down truth. They are sayings, meant to be memorable, portable, and repeatable. More than that, Proverbs reflects the life of Christ, and this is why we should treasure this book. This is why we should "get wisdom." Because when we get wisdom, we get to be like Jesus.

Common phrases for bearing false witness include "tell a little white lie," "fudge the numbers," "stretching the truth," or "omitting facts." Whatever we call it, whatever the severity of the lie, to bear false witness is to lie about the God we represent.

What the 10th Commandment highlights in all of us is the discontentedness in our hearts. So much of our frustration in life comes from wanting things that God hasn't given us. Instead of coveting, God wants us to be content.

The big idea of the 8th Commandment is...if it’s not yours and if you take it, you've stolen. This seems simple, but the command is actually pretty comprehensive. The commandment directs us to love our neighbor. One of the ways we do that is by not stealing. Rather, we should be persons of lavish generosity.

The 7th Commandment, above all, is a prohibition against sexual sin in marriage. But just like the other commandments, Jesus reveals the depth of the commandment, forcing us to pay attention not just to the letter of the law, but also to the spirit of the law. In this case, while the 7th Commandment mentions only one sin (adultery), it includes a wide range of other similar sins.

With the Sixth Commandment, the range of violation goes all the way from a cold blooded murderer to cold blooded people. It involves not just physical assault, but emotional assault; soul assault. And this is where Jesus puts this commandment —he makes it a matter of the heart.

The 4th Commandment, "Remember the Sabbath" has immediate application to our lives because it addresses the topics of work and rest. One of the biggest stresses in our lives is produced by the work we do. And because we're busy people, we could really use the rest. There are many reasons why we don't rest. This Commandment points us to Jesus. He is our Sabbath rest.

We are called to honor and respect all God-given authority. When we honor a God-instituted office, we honor God. Ultimately, this commandment is about God and us. Our response to our parents' authority is a great diagnostic which lets us know what we think about God.

The 3rd Commandment defends the honor of God’s name. In many ways, we’ve reduced this command to a cussing issue (“As long as I’m not cussing, I’m okay”). While it’s good not to cuss, the commandment goes much deeper. This command is not directed at our mouths, but at our hearts. God is after your heart.

When God says, "you shall not make for yourselves a carved image…" He's saying "don't reduce me." The 2nd Commandment is about us not reducing God and making him smaller than He actually is.
