Spiritual disciplines are activities that we do (bible study, prayer, worship, serving, community, and more) to help us connect with God. The purpose of these disciplines are to put us in a place where God can change us from the inside out. Spiritual disciplines help us experience Jesus.

Why do we lack hope? Could it be that we put so much confidence in other things that we don't need. We hope for so much: a good job; a mate; a new car. In the end, all we need is Jesus. He should be the object and focus and obsession of our hope.

For many, joy of Christmas are gifts! The Magi bring gifts to Jesus, seeking the one whose star shined brightly in the sky. We're all searching for something to bring us joy. We learn through the story of the Magi, that God himself is the real seeker.

If we are truly honest with ourselves we are all bothered by change. The birth of Christ 2,000 years ago ushered in a new era of radical change for the entire world. For some this new change was a hope that was realized, but for others it was a hope that was despised...what will it be for you?

In Luke 2:25-35 we encounter the story of Simeon, a man who waited well. Simeon was given a future promise from the Lord that he would not see death until he saw the coming Messiah. God stayed true to His promise to Simeon, and in our season of waiting we know that God will stay true to His Word to us.

James is basically carrying on the conversation from earlier in his letter that…just as faith without works is dead, so is "wisdom" that is not humbly put into practice. James doesn't define wisdom here, but he describes it. He tells us there are two kinds: there is wisdom from below, and there is wisdom from above.

How do you know if you're mature? Some would say it's based upon how much you know. Others might argue that it's what you do. James says no; it's our tongue. Our words measure our Christian maturity and therefore reveal the status of our faith. In other words, your character is revealed by your words.

How do you know you're really a Christian? Can any brand of faith save? James answers that by giving us for examples of what it means to possess true and false faith. True faith is active faith; it's faith that works.

It's God's character to care for those who can't care for themselves. And if God's life is truly at work in us, then caring for the poor and others should become part of our character as well.

We can know a lot about the Bible, but James says our actions will show what we believe. In this passage he encourages us to stop talking and listen to the Word of God— the implanted Word— by which God intervenes our very soul to change us.

We tend to think of sin as a single act. God always sees it as a multi-step process. Every part of you is involved when you sin, but it starts when our desires lead to temptation.

The topic of suffering, pain and trials is one of the mega themes of Scripture. James says not "if" but "when" we meet trials…which means as Christians we should expect trails to come. That also means we need to hear and heed what James has to say.

The Letter by James offers us an important view of the Christian faith. While he barely mentions Jesus at all, James goes straight to practical issues, namely how to live in light of the gospel. James assumes his readers know and believe the gospel; they just aren’t applying it to how they live. Proverbs 31 isn't only for women, and Mother's Day. It’s a picture of wisdom lived out in real life. And the picture tells us several things about the way wisdom should look in our lives.

Sticks and stones will hurt your bones, but words can actually break your heart. In fact the Bible tells us, our words are powerful and they hurt. Our words matter. Proverbs provides needed wisdom in regards to our words.

The core of the gospel is that we're a people who are set free because of our faith. God calls us to participate with Him in the work of freedom in the world. One of the most important things we do every day is make decisions. We make big ones and small ones. The question is how do we make wise decisions. Proverbs gives very practical guidance when it comes to making decisions.

In John 13:33-38, Jesus is not calling his disciples to a sentimental love. He’s not telling them to think good thoughts about each other. He’s saying, "I want you to press in to each other; I want you to depend on one another." He's calling them into a life of community.

What would happen in our world if the 2.2 billion people who claim to be Christians understood the relationship between themselves and God: who they are, who God is, and what they need?

We are all tempted toward two extremes in our attitude towards work: the sluggard or Idolatry (workaholism). The Bible offers us God’s perspective on work. God intends work to be a calling in which we find personal satisfaction by which we can glorify the living God.

Proverbs gives us the key to the wise use of our money — generosity. This is a not just a proverbial theme; it’s biblical. But let’s be honest...this is completely counter-intuitive.

God wants to give us wisdom, but more importantly He wants to give us Himself. We do not come to God just for His gifts, but for Him. Proverbs 8 exhorts us to love the God of wisdom and to gain the perspective of life evidenced in wisdom.

There’s two reasons why we should talk about sex and sexual ethics in the church. First, the Bible talks about it. Second, it is a natural part of life, but one that we don't always handle very well. Proverbs invites us to listen, because it has something to say about how to live well in this area.

Perhaps it’s safe to say we all see the value of wisdom in our minds. But the real question is one for our hearts. Do you treasure wisdom? That's what it's going to take if you are going to be wise. When we see what wisdom is worth, that's when we'll really begin to pursue it.

There's a huge demand for wisdom; just check out the self-help section at your nearest bookstore. Self-help offers you techniques to better yourself, so that you get what you want. Proverbs is completely different. It's about changing you from the inside out, so that your souls matches the reality of who God is and how he’s structure his world.
