The Open-Minded Music Podcast

Music EN ↓ 24 episodes

As I've aged and matured (?) my appreciation for good music has grown. I've realized that pigeon-holing myself into one specific genre of music is doing myself a disservice so I try to keep an open-mind about everything I listen to. I make these podcasts to try and convince others to make the same decision. www.theopenmindedmusicpodcast.ca

Episodes

Minus The Bear, or, what's with the song names?!? 09.01.2024

I've always been a fan of clever music played with skill and precision and Minus The Bear did that with style and a sense of humour.

Steely Dan 08.08.2021

Yacht-Rock at it's finest; the stellar ambassadors of the genre!

The Return of TTOMPCast 12.06.2021

Thought I didn't want to do it anymore. Turned out I was just depressed, like 85% of the rest of the planet.

The Brian Dandy Motorcycle Club 07.08.2020

Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre started at roughly the same time making similar music. Their paths diverged and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club sprung from the discord within BJM. This episode takes a chronological look at the Dandys but takes a broader view of BJM and BRMC.

Creativity? Nowhere To Be Seen 09.06.2020

I'm struggling to come up with anything interesting these days but apparently that struggle is worth recording.......

R.I.P. Neil Peart, drummer/lyricist extraordinaire 25.01.2020

The world lost a giant when Neil Peart passed away earlier this month (January 2020.) Pay your respects with me in this latest episode.

Pink Floyd, or, just how much coffee did you drink there, Rob? 18.11.2019

It was inevitable, me talking about my favourite band. I'm just amazed that it took this long.

The Hip, or, Happy birthday Mrs TOMMPCast (and Canada) 28.06.2019

Canada has a wealth of musical talents but few if any are more Canadian than The Tragically Hip.

Pinback, or, is that a guitar or a bass? 19.04.2019

Pinback is good. Very good in fact. Unique music written in a unique way played by unique musicians; what's not to like?

The Great Gig in the Sky, the end of ends, fin........or, cheer up man, yer bumming us out! 15.03.2019

There have been a lot of musical people who have came and went so I'm going to pay homage to as many as possible, by mentioning them with a nice musical accompaniment.

Weather Report/Jaco Pastorius, or............................holy crap! 18.02.2019

Weather Report was a fantastic band with excellent grooves and stunning playing from everyone involved and Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius was that x 2.

Drummers, or.......drummers! 19.11.2018

Drummers are the foundation of a good band. Good drummers allow the band to achieve bigger and better things.

Genesis Revisited (see what I did there?) 27.09.2018

Genesis continued down the part of excellence although not everyone would agree.

Genesis, or, the band that started it all (ironically) 03.09.2018

Genesis was and is inspirational for anyone wanting how to write and play very good intricate music.

Supertramp, or, Awesome Transient! 14.07.2018
John Paul Jones, or Damn The Torpedoes 12-string bass to the rescue! 21.06.2018

I love what this man does with a bass guitar. So tasteful yet powerful!

Level 42, or, play that funky music...........you guys! 05.06.2018

Level 42 is one of the tightest, coolest funk-fusion bands to come out of the UK in the 80s. Every member of Level 42 is a very gifted player.

Placebo, or, how come I only hear these guys in the UK? 21.05.2018

Kismet brought Placebo and me together. Once in Edinborough and once in Liverpool. Clearly I need to go back to the UK.

Silversun Pickups, or, is that a chick singing? 04.05.2018

Moody angular fantasticness from some genuinely talented people.

Rush, or, these guys are fantastic! 23.04.2018

One can't think of any better band to promote the musical excellence that comes from the great white north than Alex, Geddy and Neil (RIP).

The Watchmen, or, finally some CanCon! 14.04.2018

Winnipeg has gems too.

David Gilmour, or, can I play guitar like that? Can anyone? 10.04.2018

The reason I picked up a guitar with intent. Also the reason why I converted a standard black Fender Stratocaster into my own "Black Strat."

The Appleseed Cast 03.04.2018

I love these guys, even if I can't pronounce Chris's name right.

Primus, or.......what the heck? 05.03.2018

Sharing Primus with friends was the reason I started this in the first place, way back in March of 2018. As I'm a bit of a tool, the first 4 or 5 episodes I ever recorded were deleted by accident so I re-uploaded them, starting with this one.
