The House of Inner Tranquillity Podcast
The House of Inner Tranquillity is a Buddhist Insight meditation centre located in south-west England. The centre was established in 1980 for those in search of a practical approach to the Buddha's teaching. Stripped of ritual and cultural accretions, the path is presented in a manner ideally suited to the needs of the modern westerner. S4 Ep17: "The Inner Teachings of Buddhism" by Jacqui James 11.12.2020 42:20
It's important to distinguish the cultural trappings of Buddhism from the inner teaching - specifically, the 4 noble truths. Suffering is covered in detail (sub-divided into: intrinsic, due to change, due to formations; hidden, revealed). Suffering falls away when it is looked at and accepted - but we all tend to avoid doing this, thereby perpetuating our suffering. Jacqui James was a Buddhist In...
S4 Ep16: "Perfection" by Alan James 04.12.2020 46:05
We often speak in terms of perfection: the perfect relationship, car or boss, for example. Perfection in this sense is an unattainable myth. Perfection, as a qualitative rather than a quantitative term, can be applied to the meditation, first looking at perfect sila as freedom from craving and hatred in the moment, then covering the other sections of the 8-fold Path. Alan James founded the House...

The ignorant mind takes it entirely for granted, seeing it as ordin...

S4 Ep13: "Conformity & Non-conformity" by Paul Harris 13.11.2020 32:45
Our culture encourages us to forge an identity and stand out from the crowd. At the same time there is a requirement that we conform to society's expectations. S4 Ep9: "Self-Development" by Alan James 16.10.2020 46:28
Self-development is the gradual and systematic eradication of self-importance, the major obstacle on the spiritual path. Ultimately there is no self.
