The Flop House

We had to do it. We had to return to that ol' Rebel Moon to see what happened to all our favorite space pals, like... uh... there was the one guy who trained like, a bird dragon? And, um... Lady Sword-haver? And Charlie Hu-- no, wait, he was killed in the first one because he was a traitor. There's definitely a Scargiver in this one, though. That one we're 100% on. Oh Zack Snyder. We wish we could...

Dan briefly confuses everybody with talk about Garfield , before steering the boys into a discussion of their birthday twins, and related films. (Just listen. It'll make sense. Eventually.) We were super-excited to welcome Meredith Scardino, the brilliant writer of a billion comedy things , but most recently the creator and showrunner of the hilarious Girls5Eva . If you haven't watched, please ask yourself what you've been doing with your life, then run over to Netflix to correct your error. We'll wait. Once you're done, you'll be all the MORE excited to hear her discuss 1994's Discl...

Alonso Duralde , of our sister Max Fun podcast Maximum Film and many other projects joins us to discuss something that is, technically, a film, and not a pile of feces. But it's a tough call! In honor of Pride Month and also Alonso's new book Hollywood Pride , our guest pitched us some bad LGBTQ+ themed movies, and (in lieu of trashing some failed films with their hearts in the right place) we dec...

Elliott quizzes the other Flop House boyz (tm) about movies featuring modern society's biggest achievement and greatest bane -- computers! Catch us LIVE  in Boston ! Help support this show and unlock bonus content! Become a member at https://maximumfun.org/joinflop

The Novelizers is a podcast that takes a beloved film, gives each scene to a TV comedy writer to novelize, and then gives those scenes to a comedian or actor to narrate. Plus interviews with the people who (may or may not have) made the original film. This episode has a chapter WRITTEN BY DAN MCCOY and READ BY JOHN HODGMAN! It also features an improvised interview with some people who "worked on t...

We're going into the matrix this week, in honor of Dan and Elliott's contributions to an upcoming episode of the very funny The Novelizers podcast , where comedy writers "novelize" part of a blockbuster movie from the past -- Dan wrote a "chapter" of the original The Matrix (read by our friend John Hodgman !), and he and Elliott appear on the episode playing characters who worked behind the scenes...

We finally got our pal Matt Singer , author of the wonderful book Opposable Thumbs: How Siskel & Ebert Changed Movies Forever , on the show to talk about the team who defined movie criticism for a generation. Also Dan leads a silly Siskel & Ebert related half-game. Catch us LIVE in Boston ! Get 20% Off and Free Shipping with the code FLOP at Manscaped.com . Help support this show and unlock bonus...

We were so happy when we learned that Linda Holmes was a fan of the show , and even HAPPIER to get her on an episode! Were we equally happy to watch Baby Geniuses ? Well... you know... You can't always be happy all the time. Once you learn that, then YOU will be the true baby genius. This is the FINAL WEEKEND you can watch  our SPEED 2 live show ,  VOD, before it goes away on Sunday, May 19 at 11:...

Inspired by his recent trip with Dan to catch The Ambulance at a local rep screening (part of the Ridiculous/Sublime series programmed by our old pal Cristina ) Stuart runs through a brief installment of Missed That Movie (tm) before leading a discussion of the works of low-middle-budget maestro Larry Cohen , he of the grabby premise and wild performances. There's much discussion of trailers to Co...

What is the secret to Argylle ?!? Is the CAT the spy? Did Taylor Swift write it?!? Is it the obvious twist that Dan guessed after a moment of thought having only seen the trailer?!? Is it that it doesn't work at all as a movie, but at least it's not as relentlessly boring as a lot of Flop House topics?!? It's definitely at least two of those things! Tonight is our SPEED 2 live show , and tickets a...

In honor of Elliott's long-lost blog critiquing the Oscars, and in honor of the Criterion Channel's recent "Razzie" collection , and in dishonor of the Razzies themselves , Dan guides the intrepid flop team through past winners of America's foremost bad movie awards, and why they're always wrong wrong wrong. We partnered with StagePilot to  film our SPEED 2 live show as a streaming event ! The deb...

FINALLY after suffering through all of those bad movies, we get a treat! Patrick Swayze's Ro... what? What's that we're hearing? It's the remake? Goddamn it. Well maybe Road House 2024 will have some charms of its own. I guess y'all will need to listen to find out. We partnered with StagePilot and their talented crew to  film our SPEED 2 live show as a streaming event ! The debut is Saturday, Apri...

Elliott takes a look back at 100 Flop House minis, and that is absolutely the only thing that happens, and no special guest arrives with any particular fixation on sandworm-related science fiction. We partnered with StagePilot and their talented crew to  film our SPEED 2 live show as a streaming event ! The debut is Saturday, April 27th at 7PM ET, and the three hosts will be IN THE CHAT watching a...

Yet again, we steal a few hours Jamelle could be using to write something smart for The New York Times , to discuss his REAL passion: movies about hedgehogs. Yes, Sonic 2 was a big hit with mixed reviews, but how good is it really ? The answer may not surprise you! Also, this is our final episode in MaxFun drive 2024 - if you were intending to join, but just forgot, there's still time! Do you live...

We welcome our old friend Zhubin Parang back to the main feed after years of only joining us for our FlopTales RPG series (available as bonus content for Max Fun members: join here !) -- and for such an auspicious return we had to pick an extra-special movie: Madame Web , which some have hailed as the "Cats" of superhero movies. Does it reach those heights? Who knows. But it's surely the most enjo...

Stuart was antipodes-bound, for his Australian rambles, when we taped this one, but fear not! In his absence we recruited Hallie Haglund , noted STAR OF THE SHOW to discuss Cat Person with us, and thank god we did, because left to our own devices, we doubt that two dudes would be quite as effective at exploring the dissection of gender w/r/t hetero dating relationships that Cat Person brings to th...

We're gearing up for Max Fun Drive pretty soon (3/18-29), so as a reminder of why you love us so SO much, instead of a regularly-scheduled mini we're dropping ANOTHER full live episode from our recent west coast tour! This one was taped at the Aladdin in Portland, in front of one of the hottest crowds we've ever been blessed with, discussing one of the silliest movies we've ever discussed -- the V...

It takes a brave creative team to give Exorcist II: The Heretic a run for its money as worst "Exorcist" film, but at least part two was lovably batshit and a work of care and pearsonal vision, even if that vision was really weird. Exorcist: Believer on the other hand? Oof. You'll have to listen to find out. Do you live in or around BROOKLYN, NEW YORK or OXFORD, ENGLAND?  We’ve got upcoming LIVE SH...
