The Crossing Church Sermons

Continuing to see how we are united in our gathering, we consider how it is the cross of Christ that unites. Coming together to remember this in the Lord's Supper is the symbol and practice we pursue.

In this sermon we examine a passage that may be confusing if taken literally, but the Lord has purposed for us to understand the roles of men and women gathered as the body of Christ. This comes down to rightly understanding the relationship between authority and submission.

Through 1 Corinthians 8-10 Paul has been helping this church navigate the issue of if it was ok to eat food that had been offered to idols. From his pastoral Spirit-led counsel, we can learn how to evaluate all of our decisions so that by God’s grace our actions will lead to worship and glory of God alone, the edification of people in our life, and the spread of the gospel.

In 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 we learn from the example of the Israelites in the OT that arrogance and pride can cause blind spots as God’s people that can keep us from enjoying and understanding the spiritual blessings we have received, from seeing the destruction nature of sin, from seeing our own arrogance and pride, and from seeing God’s faithfulness to help us escape temptation to sin.

For the sake of the gospel we are willing to serve anyone and engage with all cultures to see the gospel save as many people as possible. For the sake of gospel reward we live with self-control in all of life.

1 Corinthians 9:1-18 From Paul’s life we see an example of not only a strong Biblical position about why ministers of the gospel can be supported by their local church but an even stronger picture of gospel priority that leads Paul, and us, to say no to our rights and freedoms (good things) in order to say yes to greater things (the free proclamation and spread of the gospel). In 1 Corinthians 8 we see Paul helping this church navigate situations when there isn’t theological agreement on non-essential doctrines. How do we not allow our knowledge and freedom to be demonstrated in arrogance? How do we love those with whom we disagree? How can the church be a place of unity and diversity and also harmony and love?

We take a look at a challenging passage of Scripture to consider how Christianity affects our status in society. We can be sure whether married or single all Christians are to be single-mindedly devoted to Christ.

Paul writes to address the specific issues the Corinthian Christians have questions about. Amazingly, the truth of God's Word is relevant to us. Can Christians get divorces?

In order to help us flee sexual immorality and glorify God in the body, God has given to most people the gift of married sex to be fully enjoyed by both spouses. God has also given to some the gift of celibate joyful service to Christ as singles.

Paul is dealing with the issue of sexual immorality in the church at Corinth. He uses patient yet firm instruction and encourages them to live consistent and sexually pure lives in a pagan culture. This same encouragement is applicable to the people of God in the world today.

We are born with a sinful nature that causes us to worship the creation rather than the Creator. Because of the gospel we are now free from sin and have a hope much greater than anything this world can offer.

In the church we handle non-criminal personal conflict in a way that demonstrates the presence and reality of Jesus Christ in us. We remember that we are family, that we have an eternal position of ruling with Christ, and that our love for each other outweighs our love of our rights or personal property.

Living as disciples who make disciples is the mission, but it's not something that happens on accident. This week we pause to consider what discipleship is in everyday life.

Ongoing sin the local church has no place but must be addressed through mourning, cleansing, and replacing sin with sincerity and truth. This allows the church to demonstrate it’s distinctiveness to the world and show the reality of Jesus.

Paul closes his rebuke on unity and gives a practical guide to living unified as the body Christ.

We are implementing a deacon process, but first it is imperative that we see clearly what Scripture has to say about this church office.

As we celebrate the empty tomb and life we have in Christ, we see in this passage more motivation for unity in the church and more gospel driven crushing of boasting in anyone else but God. He alone has made His people His temple, has given them His wisdom and in fact, has given us everything in Christ.

In 1 Corinthians 3 Paul calls out the immaturity in the Corinthian church and dismantles their sinful elevation of their leaders by showing them it’s God’s grace that produces all that is good and life giving in His people. Therefore, we can examine ourselves and trust God to grow us to maturity, we can accurately view ourselves as God’s workers, and face accountability for our actions without fea...

Paul writes the Corinthians about a wisdom not found in this world. As believers we have received the Spirit of God so that we understand his word, and amazingly, we have the mind of Christ.

God saves us through His wisdom and power so that we may boast in Him, proclaim Him and put our faith in Him.

The gospel is the power and wisdom of God which seems foolish and weak to those who are perishing but is cherished and loved by those who are called and being saved. It is the pleasure of God to display His gospel in this way.

Paul jumps into the issues that troubled the church in Corinth and the primary issue is that the church is divided. In this passage see the unity that we have and can experience through Jesus and His gospel as we recognize the centrality of Jesus and him crucified, the new reality of being family in the church, and the importance of humility in the midst of our distinctiveness.
