This week, in one chapter we are shown most of Samuel’s ministry. This chapter shows us the pattern that he continued for all his life. In it we will see the need for genuine repentance and faith and what a ministry built on that looks like. Through it we will celebrate that Jesus had the greater ministry than Samuel.

All through the Bible, we find God revealing His attributes to people. This week, as we learn how He revealed Himself to the Philistines, we will learn about His holiness and His judgment. But we will also learn about His wonderful mercy. Join us as we study 1 Samuel 5–6.

This week we look at the 3rd chapter and the call of Samuel. This chapter begins and ends with the language of the “word of the Lord”. Through this chapter we will see the importance and centrality of the word of God for life and faith. But we will also see how Jesus is this final Word, and the full revelation of God to us.

Last time we saw the sins of Eli’s sons. This week the focus shifts to Eli, and the picture still remains a sinful and unfaithful one. Through God’s prophecy to Eli we will learn of things that dishonour God and provoke Him to anger. But through the ugliness of sin we will also see God’s faithfulness to His promises and to His people.

This week our attention is turned to Eli’s family and to his wicked sons. This was a family that was serving God and yet was deeply wicked. Through their story and God’s interaction with them we will learn important lessons on the importance of really knowing God and fearing Him.
