Cal Poly’s dance program, Orchesis Dance Company, had their winter performance of a routine called “Falling Forward” on January 20-21 and 26-28. “We had auditions the very first week of school,” said psychology third-year Grace Schweitzer. “We had Tuesday night info meeting of the first week, Thursday night of the first week was auditions and starting that Monday, we started rehearsing.”

San Luis Obispo is becoming a hub for standup comedians. With bigger name comedians such as Trevor Wallace and Bert Kreischer performing, as well as locals and students tapping in, the scene has taken off in the area.

The World Surf League’s SLO CAL open returned to Pismo beach in January for a week-long competition open to the public. This was the first edition of this year’s SLO CAL open, with the second competition returning to Morro Bay from Feb. 23-26. Surfers from all around the world came to compete in the men and women’s junior and qualifying series categories.

In 2022, 39% of the Cal Poly community experienced low or very low food security, according to data collected by the American College Health Association.

Fall class of English 388, Cal Poly’s poetry writing class, put together a poetry reading at a satellite of love on Saturday, Feb. 3. Cal Poly English professor, Leslie St. John, wanted students to get experience outside the classroom.

Cal Poly’s Greek honors society, Order of Omega, has started recruitment for the 2023 class. Order of Omega joins together members of all Greek life fraternity and sorority chapters at Cal Poly and works to build leadership, scholarship, and service among its members.

The Cal Poly Theater and Dance department has received new technology and machineries to improve their productions, which includes an embroidery machine, a 3D printer, and a CNC machine.

Cal Poly’s Latinx/Latine Center for Academic Success and Achievement, or LA CASA, is now open and operating. Located in Room E-22 of Building 51, LA CASA joins six other centers for Student Diversity and Belonging on campus, a new collective formerly known as the Cross Cultural Centers.

On Nov. 19, the 4th annual Bash Cancer Fest will be hosted at the Red Barn in Los Osos to raise money for kids battling cancer. This event is a family-friendly function and will include a silent auction, wine, food, bouncy houses and live band performances from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. All of the proceeds will go to a local nonprofit called the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation.

The Elevator Pitch Competition, hosted by the Cal Poly Center for Innovations and Entrepreneurship, gives students the chance to tap into the entrepreneurial ecosystem at Cal Poly. Students from all majors, concentrations, and minors are challenged to pitch a 90 second spiel on a business idea for the chance to win $1,000.

The Disability Resource Center or DRC, located in Building 124, is the direct line to accommodations. Students utilize the DRC for temporary or permanent disabilities.
