A new minor is blazing all facets of Cal Poly’s curriculum. The Fire Ecology and Wildfire Hazard Planning Minor is now available, inviting students to learn about one of California’s biggest threats and how to create sustainable solutions.

A nationwide veterinarian shortage is affecting veterinary clinics in San Luis Obispo. Specifically, The Woods Humane Society in San Luis Obispo that’s being impacted by the shortage.

Within Cal Poly’s music program is a full symphony of about 80 members. This group is made up of students from all different majors who all share a passion for performance. Music senior Davis Lerner started playing the bassoon in middle school, and is attending graduate school for bassoon performance.

Students are getting excited as the first weekend of Coachella starts this Friday, April 14 to 16. Coachella is a three day music festival in Palm Springs that happens every year for two weeks in April.

Cal Poly’s Women in FIlm and Television Club (WIFT) is home to a group of students who share a passion for film appreciation and making, especially by female directors, editors, and producers. 

It took Drake Abrahamson 16 hours to shape his first surfboard.   Hundreds of blanks later, Abrahamson is now a Cal Poly graduate student who teaches other students how to shape boards. In addition to studying environmental engineering, he teaches board shaping at the ASI Craft Center two days a week.

On Saturday, March 5, Her Campus Cal Poly hosted their annual craft sale. The sale was from 12 to 3 PM in the backyard of a house on Hope Street.

At 6:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Cal Poly Recreation Center, studio one spin room, fills up with 34 eager students, staff, and locals ready for a ride. Barb LeMoine, the spin instructor for the Breakaway Spin class, finds her early morning classes so special.

The Cal Poly Chinese Student Association or CSA Lion Dance team has been one of the longest continuously student run organizations on campus, being active for over fifty years. LDT routinely performs for local schools, businesses, and events such as Illuminate dance and Culturefest.

Cal Poly’s Black Student Union hosted their first annual “The Vibe” Open Mic and Poetry Slam on February 25th as a culmination of Black History Month. The BSU put on the event with the help of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, the Black Academic Excellence Center, and the Office of University Diversity and Inclusion.

The Cal Poly Creamery is home to an ice cream drive-thru. Students and community members can stop by from 12-4 p.m. on Fridays to purchase a pint of ice cream, a scoop and/or cheese.

Central Coast Women for Fisheries, or CCWF, is a non-profit organization in Morro Bay founded in 2006 by women within the commercial fishing industry, including female fishermen, boat captains, and the wives of fishermen.

A Cal Poly club brought in local jewelry makers to help students learn this craft. This club, Fashion and Student Trends, known as FAST, held this jewelry making workshop on Feb. 22.

Since Sensorio’s opening in 2019, half a million guests from 70 different countries have attended the exhibit, according to Sensorio’s press release.

Mustang Lanes, located in the University Union, is the only bowling alley in the city of San Luis Obispo. It’s also home to a bowling class offered by the Kinesiology Department that Cal Poly students can take for one unit of course credit. Several sections of KINE 109 are offered each quarter and meet twice a week for fifty minutes at a time.

On Saturday, Feb. 18, Cal Poly announced the beginning of construction for the Comerford Tennis Pavilion at a groundbreaking event. The Comerford Tennis Pavilion is a new tennis complex with locker rooms for the athletes, outdoor seating for spectators, and a nutrition hub.

 Mental health — it can be hard to maintain for many college students when dealing with a full-time schedule. Yet, it’s proving to be a silent, ever-growing issue, especially within one of the most rigorous programs at Cal Poly: the College of Engineering.
