The Word of God makes us wise by revealing that we are all broken and are completely dependent on God for deliverance. That deliverance is accomplished through faith in Jesus. When we view the Bible from this perspective, it becomes wisdom that shapes us.

Your feelings, your heart, and even your conscience may alert you that something is wrong, but they cannot finally determine what is right. God’s Word must judge them all. So how can we distinguish worldly sorrow from genuine repentance?

Deborah arose as a "mother in Israel" when leadership was lacking. As she put her trust in the God who goes before Israel into battle, we remember He is the same God who went before us into the grave.

The Israelites assimilated to the cultures God was judging through them. Instead of driving them out, they served the Canaanite gods instead of being faithful to the true God YHWH. The same challenge exists for us today. Assimilate to the gods of our culture or be committed to following Christ!

Israel had a choice either follow, serve and obey the gods of the other nations around them or listen to the judges God had sent. They wouldn't listen, but even so God was gracious because of their groaning despite no repentance from them.

Repetition is a common method biblical authors use to bring attention to details and link similar stories. How many times do you think someone in the Bible is asked to remove their sandals because they are standing on holy ground? Exactly two times. Once in Joshua, and once in Exodus chapter 3. It’s worth checking to see if there are any connections.

The challenge to “choose this day whom you will serve” is just the beginning of a dialogue between Joshua and Israel. Their hearts are divided and Joshua pushes them to be content with God, knowing that He’s infinitely better than anything we’ll find in this world.

For 45 years, through wilderness wanderings and disappointment, Caleb waited for God's promise. Patient faithfulness is choosing to obey God consistently over time, even when the promise seems slow and life feels unfair.

The violence in these stories should show us how serious sin is to God. This is supposed to be uncomfortable. It is supposed to get our attention.
