It is the mystery of faith: in the moment of utter despair, where death seems to be the only outcome, where God appears to be absent, God is there and where God is, is life. The cry of desolation, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’, is one that we cry in unison with the crucified Son of God and we find the risen Son of God in unison with us.

Jesus interrupts business as usual. As the coming King he overturns the Temple tables, he turns everything upside down and he continues to do so today!

'Much can be revealed to us in the desert, if we are brave enough to journey through to it, and this lent we have an opportunity to journey through the desert and take the time to re-orient ourselves towards God.'

A remarkable feature of the pandemic has been the willingness of so many people to choose limitations for the sake of others, for those we love and for perfect strangers. NHS workers and many others have given themselves to serve. For all of us plans have been put on hold, freedoms curtailed, self-interests temporarily laid aside.

This battle against evil forces that controls, damages and destroys people is still on. And the followers of Jesus are called to be part of that battle.

Hear the powerful words of Jesus for you today – Come, follow me, now is the time, the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news. Are you brave enough to see the light? Are you brave enough to be it?

As we enter 2021, let us do so with the joy and confidence of Simeon and Anna knowing God walks with us into the new year and also goes ahead of us. And let us offer to all the ultimate hope and the new life of God that we too have seen in Jesus. Amen.

While this year may have felt pretty bleak I encourage you to look for the signs of light and hope in the world. For if you look, you will surely find them.

Mary’s story is about learning to accept what God wanted for her life – a complete contrast to the demanding and asking for what we want that accompanies so much of the contemporary atmosphere of Christmas.

At the end of the day, our hopes and fears won’t be met by politics; or by science & vaccines; not by economics or wealth; not by education but ‘The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee - JESUS!’

'This advent, let us bring glory to God by proclaiming the good news, by being good examples, or by our good deeds. This is the gospel we have to proclaim.'

On this first Sunday of Advent when we focus on the hope that God gives to us, whilst we remember the light of the world that stepped down into darkness, let us, like those from our psalm, pray together today and throughout this advent season…
