Jesus laid His life down for His people.  No one took Him by force.  He willingly surrendered to the authorities that He might obey His Father unto death.  He had the power to lay HIs life down and the power to take it up again.

How comforting and encourage to know that Jesus prayed for us right before He died for us!  What a beautiful prayer that demonstrates our Savior's love and will for us.  He prays for our family unity, our future home, and our familial love.

The High Priestly prayer of Jesus.  He prays first for Himself and then for His disciples.  They are chosen by God and given to Jesus.  He prays that the Father would guard them from evil and keep them in His name and His truth.

Jesus begins this beautiful prayer by first praying for Himself.  He prays that the Father would glorify Him that He might bring glory to the Father.

Jesus concludes this lengthy teaching by commanding them to take courage and be of good cheer. How can they do that?  How can we do that?  Because the Father himself loves us and because Jesus has overcome the world!

Jesus uses the pain of childbirth to help His disciples understand the sorrow and the joy that will follow.  He is hours away from being crucified and weeks from returning to heaven.  They will be sorrowful at both events but their sorrow will turn to joy because of His resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is preparing the disciples for His departure.  He's preparing them for ministry – bearing fruit. He's preparing them for community – love one another. He's preparing them for the response of unbelievers – prepare to be hated.  He encourages them with the promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit.  The "Helper" will come from heaven and aid Jesus' followers in our mission.  John 15:26-27 (ESV)...

Jesus spoke about love more than any other topic or doctrine.  What is the greatest commandment? Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. In John 15, Jesus tells us to love other Christians even more than we love ourselves.  Jesus commands His followers to love one another in the same way that He loves us.

As Christians we are called to bear spiritual fruit for Jesus' kingdom.  This may seem like a hurculean task, but Jesus says that we can bear a lot of fruit for Him if we will abide in Him.  He is the Vine providing all the spiritual nutrients that we need and the Father is the Vindedresser who prunes us to make us even more fruitful.  Our role is to ask, abide, and live like Jesus.  By His grace...

Jesus gives His followers hopeful and helpful promises:  All who come to me I will never ever cast out. I will never leave or forsake you. And here, in John 14, "I Will Not Leave You As Orphans.  I will come to you." The promise of the Holy Spirit is the very presence of God in our lives.

Jesus is leaving.  He's returning to heaven.  He’s preparing His disciples for life after His departure and for what is about to happen. One of you will betray Me.  Peter will deny me.  Where I am going you cannot go now. Troubling.  Discouraging.  Confusing.  Jesus speaks words of comfort and explains why His leaving is a good thing.

Jesus predicts His betrayal and the betrayer.  Even more shocking than one of the inner circle betaying the Son of God, was the truth that this was the path to glory!  

Who will wash the feet? Jesus and His disciples had been walking in sandals on dirt roads.  Their feet were dirty (perhaps smelly) and they were about to recline to eat.  Someone needed to wash their feet, but who would stoop to such a lowly job. Jesus enters Jerusalem hailed as the King of Israel and its long awaited Messiah.  His entrace was the fulfillment of prophecy and the beginning of the week of crucifixion.  He came in humility to be humbled on the cross. 

Is you love for Jesus genuine?  If so, there should be evidence that it is real.  John 12 gives us examples of those who loved Jesus and those who were just pretending.

The Jewish leaders were upset at the growing popularity of Jesus after He raised Lazarus from the dead.  They were afraid that Jesus' followers would make Him king and the Romans would come and take away their temple and thier power.  What would they do to stop Him?  Kill Him to save the nation.  What they intended for evil, God meant for the greatest good!

In John’s gospel there are 7 miracles and 7 “I am” sayings.  The 7 "I am" sayings are claims to divinity.  In John 11 Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life”. Only 1 being can make this claim truthfully: God. Jesus proves that He is God and that He is the resurrection and the life by raising Lazarus from the dead.

In John 11 we find an enlightening conversation between Jesus and His friend Martha.  Martha is grieving the death of her brother and is questioning why Jesus did not come to heal him.  Jesus reminds her of who He is and asks her the most important question in history: Do you believe this?  Her response is one of the greatest confessions in all of the Bible and an example of how we can cling to Je...

God is a promise maker and a promise keeper.  He promised that the Messiah would be human (the offspring of Abraham and David) and that he would suffer as a human.  Daniel had a vision that one like a Son of Man would be victorious and receive an eternal kingdom.  Jesus is the fulfullment of all of these prophecies and promises.
