Episode 32 - Why We Remember 13.12.2024

Hello! Happy Christmas Season to you all! Apologies for the tardiness of this episode. I have read Dr. Charan Ranganath's Why We Remember. It was voted the best science book of 2024. Not really self-improvement...but it was still interesting and I try to make some connections to the self-help world. I hope you enjoy the episode. Email me at selfhelpyourselfpodcast@gmail.com - I am looking for good...

Episode 31 - I Did a New Thing 06.12.2024

Welcome back to real life! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Now it is time to gear up for Christmas and the end of the year. With all that in mind, I read a very lighthearted self help book called I Did A New Thing by Tabitha Brown. It is easy. It is short. It may motivate you to try something new. Give this episode a listen and see if this book may be right for you! Email me a...

Episode 30 - Four Thousand Weeks 22.11.2024

Hello! This episode, I review Oliver Burkeman's Four Thousand Weeks. I found this book very refreshing. Burkeman makes a simple argument: we should use our time more to make ourselves feel fulfilled. How can we feel fulfilled? What fulfills us? Well, that is obviously different for everyone. But it shouldn't be "work" for anyone. Which I like because I have no job. Email me at selfhelpyourselfpodc...

Episode 29 - Switch 15.11.2024

Hello all. I hope you're all doing well. I read a rather underwhelming book this week. Switch has not been my favorite. In fact, I think it was much outdone by Atomic Habits...so you could just go back and listen to that episode rather than slog through this one...but if you want the nitty gritty on Switch, then you're in the right spot. Enjoy! Email me at selfhelpyourselfpodcast@gmail.com Check o...

Episode 28 - Win Every Argument 07.11.2024

Hello wonderful listeners. I hope you enjoy the episode this week, especially with such a divisive election. I particularly hope you enjoy the episode because I did not particularly enjoy this book. This week I review Win Every Argument by Mehdi Hasan. The book was a bit too smug and self-aggrandizing for me to enjoy. Email me at selfhelpyourselfpodcast@gmail.com Thanks for listening!

Episode 27 - Finding Me 04.11.2024

Hello! Apologies for the late episode this week. Halloween and The World Series kinda got in the way of my productivity. But it's here, better late than never. And this one is a great one! I look at Viola Davis' memoir, Finding Me. A wonderful book...a tad heavy...but quite inspiring. See what I learned from it in this episode. Episode 26 - The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck 25.10.2024

Hello! This week, I review Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. I liked this one better than his poor book about hope. That one was not good. This was much better. Take a listen and get my major takeaways from Manson's first hit. Get your copy here: https://www.amazon.com/Subtle-Art-Not-Giving-Counterintuitive/dp/0062457713 Email the podcast: selfhelpyourselfpodcast@gmail.com Find me...

Episode 25 - The Coddling of the American Mind 18.10.2024

Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay with this episode. Just been one of those weeks. And maybe it's because I have a feeble mind...This is a great book, very thought provoking, very well-researched, and very much tapping into answering why all of us millennials hate GenZ and Gen Alpha. I hope you enjoy my full review! Please, email the podcast at selfhelpyourselfpodcast@gmail.com Get your own copy -...

Episode 24 - Atomic Habits 10.10.2024

Hey! This week, I review one of my favorite books so far on this project. James Clear's Atomic Habits is a fantastic read. He makes creating good habits and destroying bad habits a logical puzzle. It's a simple, direct, and pointed read. If you are looking for a good place to start improving yourself, this is the book. Write to me with your questions, comments, or suggestions at selfhelpyourselfpo...

Episode 22 - How to Hold a Cockroach 30.05.2024

I know...I keep coming back. But this time, it's for real. I will be taking a break in June. I needed to get this review out there though because I actually really enjoyed this book. How to Hold a Cockroach is a fantastic introductory book to the Buddhist style of self-help. It is a quick, simple read that poses some great points which make up the backbone of this subset of self-help books. I...

Episode 21 - Good Mormon with Jamie Bliss 24.05.2024

I felt that maybe I was too harsh on Heather Gay. So, I asked my good friend and great comedian, Jamie Bliss, to help me determine if I had incorrectly judged Heather. Jamie loves reality TV in general, and is devoutly watching the RHOSLC (Real Housewives of Salt Lake City) series, which I was surprised to find out is actually still going on. I guess Jamie is gearing up for another season. Turns o...

Episode 20 - Bad Mormon 22.05.2024

This episode features the incredibly bad book, Bad Mormon. Heather Gay is a reality TV star from Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. This memoir is terribly written, expresses twisted values, and exposes the "real" Heather Gay. This book should be called Bad Person. Any guesses on whether I liked this book? Episode 19 - 10% Happier 15.05.2024

This episode, I review Dan Harris's book, 10% Happier. I was very surprised by this book. I really had no idea what I was getting into with this one, but it turned out to be a great read. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to get into the mindfulness/meditation space. He deftly summarizes a lot of the major players' ideas in this book and does a good job of pointing out the g...

Episode 18 - 8 Rules of Love 08.05.2024

This week, I listened to Jay Shetty read his book 8 Rules of Love. He came to my house, sat in my car, and followed me around everywhere reading away. Nah, it was an audiobook that I had playing on 1.75 speed. I thought the book was fine. Not my favorite, but useful. Have me follow you around while I tell you about it. And I get into some fun good news from this last week. Email the podcast at sel...

Episode 17 - 12 Rules for Life 01.05.2024

Hello! This week, I return to the traditional format of egotistical excellence. It's just me! I read Jordan Petersen's 12 Rules for Life this last week. In short, I liked the book, though it is arguably much more about Jordan's philosophy than it is about self-help. So, depending on how you feel about Jordan Petersen, you may not agree with my assessment of the book. However, he does g...

Episode 16 - The Untethered Soul and My Mom 24.04.2024

Hello! Hope you have all had a good week. This week, I read and am reviewing The Untethered Soul by Michael A Singer. I am also doing the guest thing again. I figured it was time to bring in an expert: my mom. She is a licensed MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) who has been working in the field for 30+ years. If anyone knows the value of a self-help book, it's her. Come see how we felt about...

Episode 15 - Barking Up the Wrong Tree and Sean 17.04.2024

Hello! This episode is a bit different from the norm. I have a guest! We start by discussing the wonderful Barking Up the Wrong Tree by Eric Barker. Then, I hearken back to the Disorganized Religion days and talk to Sean about his faith journey. We went to high school together and we have managed to stay in touch, so he is special to me even though he may not be special to you. Hopefully, you find...

Episode 14 - How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age 10.04.2024

Hey there. Thanks so much for listening! I listened to How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age, all for all of you this week. Overall, I thought this was a decent book. It provides some good advice, though largely backed by hunch and anecdotal evidence. It does feel right, on most points at least. There is a tinge of sociopath in there, but they do repeat to "be sincere,&qu...

Episode 13 - Your Brain Is Always Listening 03.04.2024

Hey little piggies. This week, I review Your Brian Is Always Listening: Tame the Hidden Dragons. This book is quite good. I found it beneficial. This book is by Daniel G Amen, MD, and he is a little touchy-feely but also practical. He gives great advice and has changed my thinking on what influences my behavior, for better or for worse. Email me at selfhelpyourselfpodcast@gmail.com Get your own co...

Episode 12 - The Secret 27.03.2024

What up you positive pigs! I hope you are doing well. This episode features Rhonda Byrne's book, The Secret. Spoiler alert: I hated this book. I think it touts absolute garbage. The book claims there is some law "The Universe" follows called The Law of Attraction. Find out what that law is and how to use it in this episode. You also get all the reasons why I think The Secret is poopy...

Episode 11 - Everything Is F*****d: A Book about Hope 20.03.2024

Why hello there. Good to have you. This week I review Mark Manson's book, Everything Is F*cked: A Book about Hope. But is it? Mark is the same guy who wrote The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck. Surprised? In this book supposedly about hope, he basically says that everything I believe is a lie for losers. Needless to say, I do not agree with 90% of this book. But it was an interesting read. Com...

Episode 10 - The Bhagavad Gita 14.03.2024

Hello! This week, I read The Bhagavad Gita. It is a book of Hindu scripture. And it is wonderful. I cannot say enough about how thought provoking and insightful this book is. It enriched how I look at my own religious understanding, and helped me be much more conscientious about my thoughts and actions this week. Get your own copy immediately! Episode 9 - The Universe Has Your Back 07.03.2024

Hey everyone! This week, I review Gabrielle Bernstein's The Universe Has Your Back. She definitely is a bit woo-woo for my taste, but I can see why people like her style. She offers a lot of good step-by-step processes, if you're into that sort of thing. But listen to the whole episode for my full review. Episode 8 - Soul Boom 28.02.2024

I really enjoyed the book for this week, Soul Boom. It is written and read - I went the audiobook route - by Rainn Wilson. Yes, the actor who played Dwight in The Office. He gives a decent overview of world religions and presents a thoughtful argument about the good religion can evoke in us. I liked the writing, and am convinced that he and I would get along.
