The Cycling Independent
Revolting
Revolting is a cycling podcast that isn’t about bikes, or even cycling really. Hosts Robot and Stevil sift through topics vaguely related to cycling, looking for what’s good, what’s better, and dwelling sometimes on what’s confusing. The guys are looking, and almost never finding, answers. But the fun is in the looking. This a cycling podcast for those not defined by racing, high-performance, or any performance at all really. It’s a podcast for people who just like to ride bikes, and do other stuff, because it’s fun. Revolting is another fine production by The Cycling Independent.

Eating Crumpets with Emily Post. You know, you wouldn’t think a couple of guys like us thinks much about etiquette, but au contraire, we’re dedicated to getting along with most of the folks who are also dedicated to getting along with us, so we try to be considerate, polite even, and today we’re gonna try […]

Getting Exactly What We Deserve. We complain a lot about getting old and our bodies falling apart, but we have systematically avoided all the precautionary steps one might take to mitigate the aforementioned problems. We didn’t wear enough pads or helmets. We didn’t use ear plugs. We didn’t wear the braces we were supposed to. […]

Support This Podcast Formative Filmography. The ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s were a time before streaming, when you had to mean to watch a movie. It didn’t just happen by accident. Back then, people could sit still for 2 whole hours at a time without checking their phones or hitting their vapes even once. We watched […]

Support This Podcast Doomsday Prepping. As long as humanity has been new boot goofin’ around Planet Earth, we’ve been preparing for the end. Will it be an asteroid strike? Alien attack? Or will we just do the species-level equivalent of falling asleep with a lit cigarette? Questions like these sharpen the mind and help you […]

Support This Podcast The Pros and Cons of Being Alive. We’ve both been alive for more than half-a-century now, and that means we know stuff. We know what’s good about it, and we know what’s less good about it. For example, we know that there’s alien life in the universe and that it too wonders […]

Lightning Strikes Thrice. We’ve been doing a bad job of getting to the topic each week, which leaves you without the deep and wise words that you come here for. Instead of correcting our behavior and getting to work earlier in the podcast, we’re just going to give in to the ADD and spend the […]

The Princesses and the Peas. Even on our best days we encounter annoyances, dumb little things that threaten to send us into a blind rage. A pebble in the shoe. An ingrown hair. Tax prep. The voices of other people. Dave Grohl in a documentary. If we could eliminate them all, would we just invent […]

Stars Going Supernova. Even the stars in the sky flame out. They say the 50s are the new 30s, but in our 30s we could sleep and injuries still healed. In our experience the 50s might be the new 80s, where stuff breaks spontaneously and we give it all up to watch daytime news and […]

Serving Size Equals None. The ‘80s represented a magical confluence of microwave cookery and our own voracious adolescences. Have you ever eaten a Subway 6” meatball sub in two bites? Have you ever eaten a sleeve of Thin Mints and noticed how much it leaves your mouth tasting like you just smoked a menthol cigarette? […]

The Unhelpful Remembance of Selves Past. We always say, “Comparison is the theft of joy.” Actually, apparently, Teddy Roosevelt said it first. He also famously once said, “Who farted? Was it you?” but that’s neither here nor there. The thing is, the person we compare ourselves most often and most unhelpfully is our past self, […]

The Quadrennial Performance Review. The corporate culture here at the Revolting podcast is sorely lacking. Because we fired everyone in HR (for obvious reasons), neither one of us has had a performance review in over four years of podcasting. Today, that changes. Music Picks: Robot – Fucked Up – Epics in Minutes Stevil – The […]

We’re Not Starting a Cult, But If We Were Starting a Cult. Humans will believe just about anything, which makes them ripe for recruitment by people who would manipulate them for their own nefarious ends. In fact, the history of humanity is the history of small groups or charismatic individuals controlling the behavior of the […]

TV Had Rotted Our Minds Long Before the Internet Came Along. You must see that the Internet is just the Choose Your Own Adventure version of television, and long before the algorithm was developed to destroy our free will, TV wormed its way into our hearts and minds, setting the stage for our eventual self-destruction. […]

A Participation Trophy for Your Trouble. It’s award season, because it’s never not award season when people who already make a lot of money and are crazy famous also want to be told they’re doing a real good job. As the greatest podcast that ever was, in this universe or any of the others, we […]

Never Put the Shovel Away. Robot made a huge mistake last week. He put one of his snow shovels away in the shed. That caused it to snow this week. OK. OK. Maybe it didn’t cause it to snow, but you know how you’re not superstitious, except that you sort of suspect that if you […]

Nature, Nurture, Geography, Chemistry, Luck. We are all bags of DNA and chemicals, raised in petri dishes, by decaying life forms in urban and suburban and ex-urban locales, saddled with genetic predispositions and vulnerable to the capricious whims of luck, both good and bad. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how babies get made. Music […]

This or That, and No Other. This week we’re just gonna play a fun little game that threatens to expose our weird preferences and wrong-headed ideas about what’s good and what is slightly less good. We hope it makes you shout at your internet radio, quit listening and go outdoors. Music pick of the week: […]

What It Is About the Thing. We have a pretty specific set of stuff we really like to participate in, and if you’ve listened for the last 219 hours, then you’re crystal clear on what those things are. To be clear, other stuff might be good too. The list of stuff isn’t meant to be […]

It’s Raining Bowling Balls. Life, like the weather, is pretty unpredictable. And sometimes, no matter how ready you are, the feces strikes the fan. In those moments, what are you gonna do? No. Literally, what are you gonna do? Music pick of the week: Robot – The Olympians – In Search of a Revival Stevil […]

The Shape of Self-Destructiveness to Come. To say that we are our own worst enemies is to discount the ignorant hatred roiling the world at the present moment, BUT we can only control what we can control, so instead of doom scrolling today we’re thinking about the reflexive, negative thought patterns that deny us the […]

Just Jibber Jabber. Sometimes you have a whole podcast planned, but then you get talking with your friend, and you keep talking, and one thing leads to another, and you blaze right through the ad break, and you still haven’t gotten to the topic you had planned to discuss and then it dawns on you […]

Don’t Be Late for Arm Wrestling Practice. Sometimes you want to stay home all the time, and that’s ok, except that you end up missing things like arm wrestling practice, a rock show, a great ride or an amazing dumpster fire. You gotta live life with no regerts, except sometimes regerts are unavoidable. Music pick […]

Landing on a Brand New Planet. You think your life is headed one way and then suddenly you’re doing something completely different. Maybe someone tells you something that leads to an epiphany, or you read a book that shifts your perspective, or someone introduces you to an activity that lights you up like a casino […]

Tilting at Windmills. In 1605, the first edition of Don Quixote hit the shelves, or whatever humans were using to keep their books off the floor then. In it, the aforementioned knight saddles up and hits the dirt road in an attempt to bring back some measure of civic values and romance to his daily […]

Is This Good? This week we’re doing something different and hopefully upsetting. We’re going to talk about whether things that everybody seems to like are actually good or just products of a mass hysteria, the sort of feeling that leads to the Salem Witch Trials or the spread of casual fascism. Music pick of the […]
