In this sermon we begin to look at the office of Deacon as Paul lays it out in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. We look at it’s unique relationship to the office of elder and the the qualifications that Paul gives for it as well.

While Paul states a number of qualification the overseer and the deacon must posses, he also names a number that they must not posses! In this sermon we look at the first three pitfalls that the leader must avoid, namely drunkenness, violence and quarrelling.

In this sermon we focus in on the quality that makes the office of overseer/pastor/elder really unique from that of a deacon or other members within the church. The overseer must be able to teach, and we look at the parallel passage in Titus 1 to consider further what Paul means by that statement.

Hospitality is something that is not very common in our western culture, and yet as followers of Jesus Christ we are called to show love and kindness to one another as God has so graciously shown mercy to us who were once strangers to His grace.

As we continue through the list of qualifications we come to a triad of words that can be described as a Spirit empowered self-mastery that must be evident in the leader and also in every disciple of Jesus Christ!

In this sermon we continue to look at Paul’s qualifications for the Overseer/Pastor. And they are not simply Paul’s qualifications but God’s as He inspired Paul to write. We look specifically at the call for the Overseer to be a “One woman man”.

After considering the nature of the office we now consider the qualifications for the office. We see that Paul has in mind present realities in the life of the leader and also the overarching description of “above reproach”.

As Paul concludes his opening words to Timothy, he begins to address the congregation. Of the many issues Paul could have started with he chose to start with prayer as the main priority for the church!

In this sermon we look at Paul’s charge to Timothy as he brings his opening to a close and focuses upon the charge to wage the good warfare. What is this warfare and how are we to battle? We see answers to these questions in our text.
