Our text this morning is meant to encourage us to continue running the race of faith, even when suffering hits as we look to a cloud of witnesses who have all run their race before us. Ultimately, our perseverance and faith come from looking again to Jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith.

We have the confidence to approach God through Jesus Christ’s priestly work. Because of this confidence, we ought to also encourage one another to grow in assurance as we anticipate Christ’s return together. This is what it means to be the church. Because Jesus is our great high priest, we can approach the throne of God with confidence. God dwells in glorious and unapproachable light, holy and unfit for any impurity, but Jesus has come to be our great high priest so that in all our weakness we might enter into God’s presence with confidence. In our passage today, the author of Hebrews invites us to consider where Jesus is taking us. He exhorts us to “hold on” and “to strive” that we might get there. He also warns us against falling away into unbelief and sin. Why couldn’t God just come in all his power and fix everything? Why did he need to be human? What business do humanity and divinity have together anyway? Anticipating this question of why God would lower himself, why he would appear in weakness, the author of Hebrews now goes on to explain Jesus taking on flesh with his Divine identity fresh on our minds.

In Genesis 3 we read about Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God’s gracious rule as they believe the lie of the serpent. They chose to worship creation over the creator and the consequence was death. The purpose of Genesis 1-2 is that we would know that God is the Sovereign Creator. He is sovereign over the stories of the world and sovereign over our story. He has established a good creation, and he will not abandon his creation project. The One who created all things is also our Redeemer. The one who has Redeemed us is also our creator.

In this stand-alone sermon, we dive into Psalm 16, a well-known song of David, the King of Israel. A man who had everything one could dream of: status, approval, land, kingdom, servants, throne. Yet, he declares to us in this Psalm that only God can satisfy our souls. David was not a perfect King— he was a very broken man— but God was where he turned and God was his source of Joy.

Culture tells us that rest is found in consuming and/or escaping. God shows us that rest is rooted in trust. It’s an active process of entrusting our lives and all its outcomes to God the Father.

What does it look like to work in the way of Jesus? Work is such a big aspect of our lives. So much of our time, energy, thoughts, emotions, get occupied by our work. Most of us spend 1/3 of our day at work and 1/3 of our day sleeping before we go back to work. So much of our lifetime is occupied by our work. Leadership is an important part of the New Testament church. Jesus leads us away from worldly leadership and teaches us the new way of servant leadership. The way of Jesus leads us to use our power and position to serve others rather than for our own needs.

The Church is important. Jesus teaches us that we don’t have to live in regard to our own authority. We are given by Jesus a community to belong to. We don’t just belong to the church passively. To each person, a gift is given, a gift of grace. The holy spirit has uniquely custom fit spiritual gifts for every single person that is in Christ.
